What mile time can you run on that mileage?

I ran a 5:27 time trial a few days ago. I had knee surgery about a year ago and had to take six months completely off. The last few months I have built up to about 13 miles per week in three sessions per week. I am 45 years old and 195.

Then how come I have been doing 20 mpw for a year, and I can only run a mile in 8:05?

Depends what those 20 mpw look like. 20mpw of just random base mileage? I'd run about 4:55 or so. 20 mpw of "ideal" training? Probably about 4:35.
Those times might sound fast to some people, but my frustration when I was training was always that I had a reasonably good baseline, but my PR from all in training wasnt a lot faster than that. I've always been the epitome of "90% of the benefit from 10% of the effort."

The 20 MPW was 80% easy runs and 20% interval workouts.

A low 6 minute mile is the equivalent of a sub 21 minute 5k, and I doubt if the average healthy male can do that in a few months unless they were already fit as well as healthy. If they could, far more would run those those times in Parkruns.

Exactly. The fact that it took me 20 MPW to run an 8 minute mile shows how hard running is for the average person

I have broken 5 on 25-30 mpw with no speed work before
But you have to realize my mile time barely improves on actual training I’ve never broken 4:40 in my life

Same. My mile doesn't seem to improve with training and I am at an 8 minute mile

Ok but you are doing 20mpw and you’re very new to running. Run 40 mpw and I guarantee you will break 7 minutes

Question for you David... When you finish your 8 minute mile are you in extreme pain?
When I was 39. I ran about 20 miles a week, strictly (cruise) intervals and speed work.
My PRs were 4:27 1500m (equates to 4:48 mile), 2:07 800m, 57.1 400m.
