So, in summary: for beginners the key is to get to the point where you can run for 90:00-120:00 as soon as possible at least 3x weekly in your early running (the pace being whatever your body can handle without gasping), correct?

Do at least that much work, interspaced by shorter runs of 30-60:00 on the other days, for a total of 8-10 weeks and THAT is 'base training' right??

The hills, intervals, jog-the-curve-sprint-100-on-the-track (sharpeners), then competition come last???

If you're talking about "beginner", try to get your aerobic capacity as high as possible and one good measure for that is to be able to run 2-hour comfortably but the duration depends on your background and strenghts and weaknesses and time available till your "race".

Try not to read in to "3-times a week" too much or that would become the mean to the end (is this how you guys say it?) and you may not recover adequately to continue. You need to be building up all this time, not breaking down.

"Beginners" should also consider all the hilly course running and cross country running Lydiard's "beginners" did. Try to include as much golf course or park running as you can to make your form supple and to maintain good muscle tone. That would help you later.

Also, don't look at "race" as the last thing on the program. It is actually the fist thing to consider (if that's what your goal is); pick the race you want to perform well and count back; analyze how many weeks you have and arrange your whole program around it, taking into consideration your background of trainng and strengths and weaknesses.

So you ARE still around. I wondered about that a few million posts ago. Has it been all that you'd hoped for?

Okay, sorry... Greg McMillan warned me about this but it should be taken care of now (though it would take a couple more days to be effective).

I know it's been taking so long but we are still working on it. We'll get membership page where we'll get our advisory staffs to chime in (Dave Martin, Peter Snell, Steve Jones, Nic Bideau, some Japanese coaches, etc.). Also we'll have some audio page where you can actually listen to some of Arthur's clinics as well as voices of original "Arthur's Boys", Barry Magee, Bill Baillie, Ray Puckett, John Robinson, Snell... Will eventually add more DVD as well (clinic, other footage). We're also getting Lydiard chronicle page which will be prett cool. All these are taking a lot longer than expected but our web guys, Dream World of MN (okay, this is a bit of a PR), has been doing a great job and thanks to them.

Be patient and stay tuned...
