I'm trying to avoid Target Date funds as they generally have higher expense ratios.
My thought process behind why I characterized that 20% allocation as fairly conservative is from the basis that you'll hear many people advocate for bond allocations equal to their age, or age-10, or age-20. So at 30 years old I'd be at age-10 which is the middle of those three methods.

Thanks for the feedback. It seems the Fed is likely to raise rates next week, we'll see how long the trend continues.
The other aspect of target date funds, not necessarily Vanguard, but fund sponsors compete for business. So the incentive is to chase performance (increase risk).

The forecast for second-quarter real GDP growth fell from 3.4 percent to 3.1 percent on June 5 after the U.S. Census Bureau's manufacturing report and the incorporation of motor vehicle sales estimates released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis on the prior business day. The forecast of the contribution of inventory investment to second-quarter growth declined from 0.87 percentage points to 0.77 percentage points after this morning's wholesale trade report from the Census Bureau.
