Mike Smith is one of the most underrated coaches in the country. He works extremely hard, fields a complete roster across all events, he identity’s and hires strong young assistants with a limited salary pool, he thinks outside the box and will consider candidates from smaller programs and D3 programs and give them an opportunity to prove themselves. West Point is the most difficult regiment of the 3 big service academy’s. He is a very strong leader and an honorable man. He has high standards of behavior but far exceeds those with the expectations and demands that he holds himself to. Like someone else said, he provides strong mentorship and leads by example helping propel his staff to advance in their career. If you can match his hustle you will thrive working for Mike.

The Mike Smith and West Point slander can stop before going further. There are a lot of factors that go into turnover, especially here and in New York. He prepares his assistants for a potential opportunity elsewhere, knowing he hires good coaches and people. Proven track record of that has already been shared. He himself works extremely hard, has high standards of performance, and fights for the program on a 24/7 365 basis. No one is leaving because of Mike Smith, outside of him developing them. People leave over higher salaries, better benefits, higher cost of living, family situation, the frustrations of complicated athletic development with military training and obligations, etc. We all got calls this offseason inquiring about interest in other programs because of what Mike has built here, but the staff we have now is here to stay.

As I write this, Charlotte Richmond (Army) just won the NCAA Northeast XC Regional, and coming off a third straight XC Patriot League title for the Army women, and an outdoor track Patriot League team title last spring for the women as well. His program, and Army West Point, are doing just fine.
