Heard Gabby’s ex boyfriend Tom Berkeley was getting the UGA XC job and will be her immediate boss. Wonder how that dynamic will work if they aren’t back together.
I guess that’s how he got the job, hiring an 800m coach with no experience coaching a collegiate team or 5k/10k runners did seem like an odd hire.
Can’t believe this got past Caryl.
I heard coach Berkeley was mentored under the great track coach Haywood Jablomi.
I heard Tom was getting fired from Baltimore 800 and reached out to Gabby for help. Poor dude, at least he caught a break. This might be a solid move for him if he can learn to develop athletes of collegiate caliber. I fear it will only be temporary, no way he knows what he is doing in XC and Caryl will be very impatient if there aren’t immediate results.
With all of the Scholarship - Academic Aid, Daily Meals - Snacks, Alston Money ~$6,000 / NIL / In-State Lottery Scholarships the “non-funded” SEC XC Coaching Jobs are going to be very different than what they have been in the past. You can legally get an S-A costs covered for significantly less TF Scholarship (countable aid) than it has ever been in the past.
Yes, that’s true but at the same time a school like Georgia is having to cut 10 male XC athletes at the start of the year.
With big football money comes smaller rosters and less ability to develop a full team effectively.
That’s why Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and South Carolina don’t have men’s XC.
Auburn is in the same boat having to cut athletes this season. Alabama has restricted roster size for XC.
The only SEC men’s program other than Arkansas that looks like it has the ability to thrive is Tennessee.
Also have heard that Texas A&M cut upwards of 15 men from their XC roster in the past month alone. Not a good sign for American high schoolers hoping to run for their local SEC schools. If you’re not ready to contribute points right away, they won’t use up 3 Title IX counters on a male distance runner.
Some of these programs aren't cutting because they can't afford it. It's literally because the runners don't have the talent to compete at that level right now and the coaches rather focus on winning right now. There are some mid majors that want coaches to focus on having a large roster etc...As a coach, you have to find a balance too many American runners have a false sense of hope about what it takes to run at a high level. Some coaches elect to trim that roster size to cut down on nonsense. Trust me they ain't cutting studs and points scores. They are more than likely cutting t-shirt holders. They will even keep the kids who are good for APR, but if you're average with average grade and you're a headache at times. It's time to go for some coaches
