I wish a Vance, instead of being an apologist, would just simply say, look, 1/6 happened, I can understand why it was appalling, I don’t condone it or exonerate it, I’m sure Trump would handle it differently if he could go back, and the failure to adequately secure the perimeter falls on both parties, Republicans included.
But, at the same time, a peaceful transfer of power did ultimately happen, and as long as you want to keep bringing up “existential” threat to Democracy, since it’s all you have to talk about, then let’s talk about censorship and the first amendment, let’s talk about the de facto insurrection at the border, replete with criminals, drugs, and weapons, and, above all else, let’s talk about the coup you just pulled on the sitting president whose solemn oath was to the American people who duly elected him, not to his party. Had you gone through proper channels and used the 25th amendment to jettison him because you’ve been hiding just how bad off he is, then, fine, that is acceptable protocol. But what you did was a subversion of Democracy with a moral equivalency to however you’re characterizing 1/6, so it’s incredibly disingenuous to talk about one and not the other.
I wish someone would just call out the media for continually asking the question. It’s not giving 1/6 or the behavior a pass. It’s point out the ridiculous hypocrisy of the Democratic Party and shutting it down once and for all. But, for some reason, a Vance just cannot do it.
It’s the hypocrisy of the Democratic Party that so many of us find appalling, not a blind loyalty to Trump and his bad faith shenanigans, which are also appalling. Period.
This might be the first ticket in a very long time where, if you are not voting libertarian or third party, then perhaps you should vote for the bottom of the ticket. Heck, I don’t like either party, but I think a Vance/Walz kumbaya ticket is preferable to either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris. At least I can respect them.
