Siena is still in the midst of their search. Looks like they will start the season without a coach.
Head coach will hire the assistant, so that won't happen until the head coach is in place. The assistant job is only a step above a volunteer position.

Probably a case of both and I hear one reason for the delay is that the new coach is an old friend of Harrison and has no serious collegiate coaching experience and they are trying not to lose too many athletes to last minute transfers so they have the numbers to field a squad. Sad really, has potential to be a great program in distance with minimal support.
What other D1 school in any other sport would cut it this close? Of course Harrison is the head coach now in his 5th season as head coach and he still has no degree despite telling us when he was hired he was close and would get it done asap. Curious how many other D1 programs are headed by a coach who played baseball and never did track???
How about the head coach wants to make sure he's hiring the best person that he can get and if the best guy gets to campus a week later it doesn't matter in the big scheme of things. A bad hire that sucks for years that gets to campus to do a poor job a week earlier is a bad idea.

This p*ssy attitude is why I have read some bios of D-I coaches that have been at a given school for 20+ years and proudly announce that they have had 3 national championship qualifiers, not All-Americans, just people that got into the meet, went out in the first round, and didn't score.
Meanwhile, yes they may have started at a paltry 45k, but over the 20+ years they have built a nice retirement, and their salary has crept up to 70-80k range, which, don't get me wrong isn't that much, but in the coaching world it is comfortable, and VERY good for a non-producer.
Why don't you guys that won't hold coaches to performance standards get it? Even if you are at one of those "schools that aren't on a level playing field," i.e. a mid-major or small private D-I, it's up to the coach to build it or go get it if it doesn't exist. Yes it's true, you may not be able to land recruiting classes like Oregon, Ok State, or Wisco, so you have to work harder, maybe even 2x harder with the 2nd & 3rd tier recruits that you DO land. If you don't have a ton of funding, you have to go out and squeeze it out of the community that you are in, and yes, I realize it can take YEARS.
Before you dismiss me as someone who doesn't know what I am talking about, let me say that I WAS a D-I coach(happily stepped aside to pursue another career) at a small mid-major, and I did those things that I have talked about above. I can tell you in my short career(less than ten years) I was able to easily produce close to 15 national qualifiers, and yes a good few also pulled in All-American accolades, and I felt that I wasn't good enough because I didn't compare myself to the lowest common denominator, I focused on what the best were doing.
Last bit of my rant is to just say that to all you out there that are still in the biz, stop looking around with the poor me attitude. I went to a talk once by the greatest that ever coached in our sport, Coach McDonnell. He talked about the beginning at Arkansas, in the early 70's when he took over, and how he had NOTHING! Track and CC were absolute after thoughts by the athletic dept. In effect the program would be a weak mid-major by today's standards, with roughly 10,000 students, not a full compliment of scholarships, and NO facilities at all. Some people think that his greatest legacy are the 40+ national championships, but if you ask him, it's the program he built, that you see when you go there, from nothing. End of rant!

I strongly agree that there are some coaches out there coasting and can work harder. But you sound young.
It takes high scholarships to land the best recruits that eventually score at the NCAA meet. Many Md majors want to provide a balanced approach in cross country and track so they can have a competitive team at their conference level. Scoring at nationals DOES NOT equate to a great coach. It all depends what the mission of the program is.
Mid majors that take a balanced approach (sprints jumps throws distance), will NEVER CONSISTENTLY compete at the national level (top 25). Once in a while they may get lucky with one or two athletes that improve like crazy and will score at nationals. All you really need is two really good athletes to score at the meet to put a team in the top 25.
Do your best to take off your blinders. You'll find it very rewarding to develop the walk one that score at the conference level. It's really about making the most of what you have.

ps... John McDonnell built Arkansas from NOTHING.. i attended a smaller Arkansas NAIA school and we 'owned" Arkansas in track and field, although the rules didn';t allow us to compete.. John changed that as you can see.

male athletes, unless you are going to a small conference and are top of the nation, are probably not gettin a full.
I guarantee Time Mack did not get a full ride to college. Top pole vaulter in the nation will never get over 75% unless the head coach is the pole vault coach.
If a top sprinter goes to a top school, they will probably not get a full, because part of being a good sprint program is not having to pay as much for athletes so you get more.
Look at Clemson. They can final like 5 girls in the 100 hurdles at conference. They are not all on fulls.

Lets cut the crap. Coaches who hire young bucks, are clueless of what they are getting. You get some first year coach who has completed the level 1 and level 11 certification. They get jobs and actually realize they don't really like to recruit or coach. Then they bail out to another program they think will be easier to work at. Its a sad day when programs go for inexperienced candidates who come in and destroy the programs.
