I don't know why aid to Ukraine and Israel was included in the border bill. Congress groups things together all the time. I imagine after the border bill was shot down, we continued to support Ukraine and Israel under Biden, and Israel under Trump. I don't think the Biden admin was ever worried about getting those aid packages passed if that's what you're implying. Senator McConnell was a big supporter of Ukraine.
My question is about 5,000 number. I am trying to work out exactly where it says that 5,000 people would be accepted per day. Anyway here's Gemini again:
The 5,000 Figure:
The 5,000-encounters-per-day figure was a significant point of discussion.
If the average number of daily encounters reached or exceeded 5,000 over a seven-day period, certain restrictive measures could be triggered.
These measures could include:
Suspending asylum processing.
Expedited removal of migrants.
Other border-control actions.
It's Not an Allowance:
It's crucial to understand that the bill did not authorize or allow 5,000 people to enter the country daily.
Instead, it established a trigger point that, when reached, would enable the DHS to impose stricter border-control policies.
Back to me now. It doesn't seem like 5000 would be "allowed" per day. That's a very loose, mostly incorrect interpretation of the bill, from what I'm reading. It seems like 5k is a threshold which could trigger the shutdown of processing altogether. In other words, it's more complicated than that. Of course it is.
