Because right now he may be saving his legs to make it legit while he has company. If he has runners tagging along he can always say his legs are in pain and just take it easy that day. He won't be giving it away with honest people at his side. It needs to be a spy mission.

Sure, and then he won't get the record. So the the decision has to be made. Spy on him to catch him cheating. Or tail him 24/7 which will prevent him from getting the record. The former is harder to do, but more rewarding if caught.

That said his jig is up anyway. I don't think spying is going to catch him now. He's gonna try to do everything by the book. Which also means he won't get the record.

If you tell him you are showing up then he comes out runs a bit and sends you on your way knowing what he was capable of for the time you were with him, not for the entire route. No one is interested in If he is CAPABLE of running some distance now whilst knowing he is observed, they are interested in if he is actually doing it when he doesn't know if he is being observed. You only find that out by watching what he does when only his crew are with him.

Here's my theory. RY ran the race, but someone else ran with the the timing chip until the last 5 or 10k, hence the odd late split. The way to investigate this is to look at the time of day splits of some of the people who appear in the RY's race pictures.

I do. 31 years of ultrarunning and 18 years of multiday race experience. I am just a normal runner but I have seen a lot of world class athletes from all over the world performing.

Trust me on this: Nobody behaved like Robert Young does. 70 mile days over weeks don't come easy.

Just look at some videos from the 3100 mile race in New York.

Make sure it's him running in the day time too!
