Pat Cunniff is a really good coach. Measuring the amount of all americans you have is not an indicator of how good you are. Just take a look at the athletes you get with the institution you're working for and if they get better or not. He has done a great job at developing athletes. This is someone that without a doubt deserves his shot.

Capt. America said it very well. A coach SHOULD be judged by how the athletes under their care improve. However, the world of coaching is not a level playing field. Every program allocates their resources differently and has different environments to deal with, etc. Unfortunately, the people who do the hiring (and way too many people even here) do not have and/or take the time to really evaluate coaching talent, they just take a quick look at some stats and make a judgement.

So looks like Ross Richardson has been hired as our new throws coach at Ohio State.. so that one position down they are still looking for women's volunteer for throws at Ohio State and volunteer distance position. Can't believe they are looking for volunteer on women's side you basically have All-American's returning and #1 recruit in the state coming to throw for women next year.. Men are in big trouble no talent- hopefully Ross can get them moving.

I don't know S#@% about the throws but part of that post jumped out at me. The #1 throws recruit in OH is a lock to go to OSU already when her coach will be a volunteer and they don't even know who the hell that person is going to be??!!?? Just seems odd.

He is known for stealing athletes I have sent emails to the NAIA and they have agreed. He has reached out to ENROLLED athletes trying to poach them. He was caught three years ago and slapped on the wrist.

He got in a fist fight at NAIA Nationals in 2007 with another coach and said the other coach threw the punch first when ALL witnesses said differently.

He was not offered the job at CU PDX because there were way too many read flags. Good Coach yes... successful yes, but not a good person.

Wow! Its funny some people can come up here and just make up some of the craziest things. I went with Coach Whitlock to the majority of his national meets and he was nothing but a class act. How can you say he steals kids?? Who has he stolen?? Hes had a whopping 3 kids transfer into his program in his 8 years...Edward Taragon , Jordan Valle and Erin Britton. I dont think a Baptist Institution would keep him around if he cheated or got busted like you say. And the fist fight thing is by far the dumbest and most absurd thing I have ever heard of. Dont you think his baptist school would have fired him for fighting at the meet?? LOL you are obviously a disgruntled coach that cant beat him or an ex athlete that did something wrong to not make it. And you have the audacity to come on here and make up lies and say someone is not a good person but yet you hid behind your name?? Coach whitlock built the program at wayland and for you to come on here and make up lies about him is just plain wrong. He was a great man to me and to many of my teamates and is one of the hardest working, most caring coaches I have ever been around. You are a coward and a liar, anybody that really knows coach knows what a great guy he really is.

Nope he's an arse and the fight did happen have no idea about stealing recruits but that fight happened. It was in Tennessee and the punches were thrown in the Athletic Training area and it was with the Langston coach anyone who knows them know they hate each other.

Word is Portland State distance job is down to 3 finalists. Interviews start next week.

I realize these are much smaller jobs - but I noticed Siena College posted an assistant coach position last month, and now has posted a head coaching position? Any word on this?

Also, any information about Colorado Christian U? D2 school, no track, RMAC member, about middle of the pack? Their coach resigned a few weeks ago, and they're not the most proactive at conducting a national search.

Uh, Rita, the women's throws coach that was at OSU was a volunteer. So you are replacing a volunteer with a volunteer with whomever is hired.

No talent in Men's throws at OSU? They have 2 incoming ESPN Gatorade Players of the Year who were also state champions One from RI in Hammer and Weight and one from PA who broke the HS National Record in Javelin.

So if Portland State is down to 3 finalists for xc job next week then the team reports a few days after that must mean either a) coach is already determined and the one being selected already knows and is preparing or b) the school and head coach really don't give a crap about distance and cross country.

Probably a case of both and I hear one reason for the delay is that the new coach is an old friend of Harrison and has no serious collegiate coaching experience and they are trying not to lose too many athletes to last minute transfers so they have the numbers to field a squad. Sad really, has potential to be a great program in distance with minimal support.

What other D1 school in any other sport would cut it this close? Of course Harrison is the head coach now in his 5th season as head coach and he still has no degree despite telling us when he was hired he was close and would get it done asap. Curious how many other D1 programs are headed by a coach who played baseball and never did track???
