2021 College Track & Field Open Coaching Positions Discussion

Sooo this will be my first post ever on here. All those who say the Vandy (or any high academic school) hire is bad. Or any specific hire is bad because the head coaches event is not what you deem appropriate based on the schools high academics, etc. are either consciously or subconsciously making a biased or even racist statement.

You simply believe that because the academic standards are higher, that individuals who are “sprinters” or “jumpers” won’t have the ability to get into the university or that they will struggle. Yes, traditionally higher academic programs are geared towards distance, but that SHOULDN’T be the case NOR the expectation. So you might want to consider you heart or motives when making statements like that. I wish AT nothing but the best. And you should too!

Is there any university in the country where their team GPA for track and field is higher than their GPA for XC?

AT will be 2 steps ahead of all ya’ll. She is smarter and more savvy than quite a few of the so called gurus running programs in our sport.... She will find her niche.

From 2019 stats, average SAT of black students is 933. White average is 1114. Vandy average SAT is 1505. Vandy couldn't even find kickers for their football team, they had a women's soccer player as the kicker.

Not to mention Nashville is the epicenter of country music, sprinters generally aren't into that scene.

That’s an easy one. Miller will take over.

You people need to calm down about Vanderbilt. If Althea is half as smart as you all say, she will hire a good distance coach and give them a lot of money to work with. And if she is half as savvy/competent as you people say she is, she’ll be gone in 2-3 years to a full program that can get in whoever they want now that she’ll have SEC head coach experience - for double the salary. Everyone wins.

Althea will do well for next few years and then either her alma mater hires her when Shaver retires or another even bigger P5 job seeks her out. Vandy no doubt sees value in diversifying the focus of the track program. AD probably sees it as helping the football and men’s basketball program in a small way but in big picture she had opportunity to hire a talented young female minority coach who has made major impact at every school she has been at from Georgia, Clemson, Purdue, Kentucky and UAB. Duke’s women just won the ACC title and had many non-distance All-Americans and Trials qualifiers. If Duke can with no indoor facility, most certainly Vandy can under AT.

You don't really need an indoor facility in NC that badly

How is her changing the entire program to a different focus and then bolting good for vandy?

They also passed up hiring the coach that got Duke that title so who knows.

AT is a great coach imo. I think it's a bad fit for both success at vandy in track will be like top half which I'm assuming she won't enjoy and vandy will most likely be getting someone who is using the school as a way point to other things.
