John Oliver of Purdue to OK State... could the Cowboys finally beat NAU?! Not sure coaching was their problem, but maybe a fresh set of eyes could be the 1% they need to take home the dub.

Would seem to be a step backward.

If you have been in the business for decades you know there are SO many reasons why someone would leave a supposed stronger program to a "lessor" one. Working atmosphere - City life - Cost of living - Lower scholarship availability - terrible admin - less responsibilities - family/friends nearby - easier recruiting situation.... Could go on and on with many more reasons... It's not always about money / status people....

It's really easy to get wrapped up in the prestige and status of different jobs and get on someone for what's perceived as a "bad" move, but I'm glad someone else shares the sentiment that it's not all about that. A lot of P5 coaches I've spoken to will off-handedly mention how they miss the days prior to the big job at the smaller schools. Maybe it's grass-is-greener mentality and maybe money to support a family drove them to the bigger job, but there's nothing wrong with making a career choice that isn't about money or prestige.

To tack on to this, Coach Herbster looks to have close ties to the Carolinas, having coached at the high school and collegiate level in his early years (Charlotte Area, Clemson). Given both the facilities and current talent on the team, App. State and Herbster could experience immediate success, very easily. Rumor has it that Mclean is increasing support to the distance program...completely to the contrary of what many claim he has done/will do. Should be fun to watch what happens, this fall. First race is only six weeks away...so, we shall see.

I think since the pandemic a lot of coaches at the higher level realized that they can still be successful at a mid major while preserve their insanity and life balance better.

Hey I am a sprints guy but this is a good move by App State. The Director definitely has a vested interest in distance.
