Given that he supposedly ran 8-ish miles after spraining his ankle, it would likely swell up quickly after stopping. Bruising can take a while to appear and will likely linger for quite some time -- especially in the foot where the blood pools. I've broken my ankle once, sprained it badly after that twice -- but the response will be different for everyone. A bike ride after a few days of a sprain could probably happen. A long run wouldn't be too pleasant. But the key thing to keep in mind is that David is willing to go places no one else is willing to go. So, all is possible with him. He's also a world class coach, a low mileage runner (except for the mileage he adds that he doesn't put on Strava so he doesn't "spam everyone's feed"), provides super-awesome personalized training for all his clients, loves everyone -- except for the people he hates, and his treadmill is either calibrated, or uncalibrated.
Oh, and he has said he's going to shock the world and win Western States! Errr uhm, but he didn't really mean that, he meant "I almost definitely don't have a chance to win." But, hey! My buddy said I had the ultra trail performance of the year on his podcast. Huzzah! So fun.

Nor is he ever wearing those pants. He's shown warming up in a puffy jacket and race shorts. And logistically, I don't imagine him putting on pants and changing shoes post-race. He's seen walking down the hill with Megan back to where she parked for that aid station. We get some footage of them by the car. And then I don't think he's at the finish -- just the camera guy goes there to get that footage. So he'd go back to his hotel/rental and shower and change into normal clothes and shoes.
Also the pants he's wearing for his commentary in the video (Adidas Terrex) aren't the pants in the sprained ankle pic either. They don't look like that at the ankle.
I think Megan was already told about his ankle (maybe David told the camera guy and he passed it along). She's ready to hand off the bottle but when he stops (rather than taking the bottle at a run) she looks down and sees his left shoe is untied. So she asks "this one?" I think the caption about her supposedly reading his mind is deceptive. I don't think there was so much swelling that it was obvious.

Also, why in the world would David of all people decide that this year his "post-race kick around recovery shoe" would be an old hoka maffate"? If I just ran hard for most of a 50km trail race and "sprained my ankle really bad" slipping on a hoka maffate (hoka being an old sponsor of his also) would be one of the last shoes I'd want to wear later that day. It's not like he can't afford any brand and any model of shoe of his choice, right? A recovery slipper would make more sense, no?

David has mentioned Eddie and Eli multiple times as the guys to beat at Big Alta and even going as far as saying he could "race conservatively" to finish on the podium. Instead he went for the win. That's absolutely wrong.
Third place at Big Alta was Remi Leroux who in addition to having serious trail chops, has a 30:26 road 10k and 66:49 half to his name. Faster than anything David has put up in those distances and a deeper resume on the trails.
Despite David's "humility", his the lack of respect for a guy who (despite being Canadian) races with the best American trail runners right now feels egregious. You don't get to say you can race conservatively and beat a guy like Remi and then DNF after making a stupid move.

Having watched the video (very well filmed btw, this guy Cody is clearly talented/fast with a camera) here are my conclusions:
- David could clearly have finished the race.
- He has rolled his ankle at some point but it's not affecting his running form too badly; maybe knocked his mechanics a little bit.
- The gap between himself and the race leaders was a significant factor in dropping out. Megan says "That's how you hurt yourself and also they're like..." then points dismissively into the distance. Then when he asks how far the gap is she says "It's big, just turn off your watch."
I'm left with the impression that had Megan not been there telling him to stop, David probably would have finished it.
At least he listened to Megan for once. More often it’s David, the one without an actual medical/science degree, banging on about a study he finds interesting. When poor Megan tries to interject/correct/steer the conversation back on topic, David either jokingly dismisses her comments or quickly replies “Yeah, well that’s what I meant.” What I’ve noticed more than anything is that he can never ever be wrong.

Kudos to videographer guy Cody.. I really liked the latest video and especially the race footage.
As for Roche.. it was interesting to see the interaction between him and Megan. He just gave her a look and she immediately encouraged him to drop out. I didn't see any swollen ankle at that point? And it seemed it was more like "oh you won't podium anyway might as well drop out now".. which always bugs me with pros. If he was really hurt I get it but it seemed more like ego..
