I'm always curious when I read these seemingly omniscient posts about program's scarcity of scholarship money.....how do you come about this assumed understanding? Do you have direct, insider knowledge? And is this head coach with your presumed "no interest" in certain groups on the record as saying such? By publicly available record, this program has $608k allotted to male scholarships and $985k allotted to female scholarships. That is enough to build a strong and balanced program, especially at a public school.
Well, I'm in no way connected to the Illinois program, but I'd ask you: have you ever seen a Petros team put an emphasis on distance? No. Have you ever seen a program where the event group of the director doesn't place an emphasis on his event area? No. So it's not a far leap to get there. Put another way, someone in an earlier post brought up their amazing signing class. Tell me, how many distance athletes comprised it?
I don't need a public statement (and have you ever seen a director publicly say they don't care about an event area?) from him to know the direction his program is going. People are creatures of habit by nature and we gravitate and do what we know best. Come on man. Besides given the number of programs that focus on distance (Wisconsin) and mid-distance (PSU) in the conference if you aren't going to make a concerted effort to put money there - you aren't going to be competitive. You'll get lucky every now and then, but it's not going to drive your team score.
I will grant you: with 18 scholarships on the women's side it is possible to be a well balanced program, especially if your school has great assistance programs outside of athletic aid (think academic aid, reciprocity agreements, etc). Anything that helps you stretch your dollar means you can be better in more event areas.
I don't even understand why you're in such a tizzy over stating the direction of a program. It happens everywhere: Milt has pushed UNC to be much more distance-centric, St. Clair at Nebraska throws heavy. It's not a knock on the other event groups or the coach - it's what happens.
Not really in a tizzy. You might have received some comments really meant for the totality of comments I've read over the years in this spirit. I think your analysis of the team is fair and reasonable. But the reflected spirit of scarcity of program funds is just silly. "Limited to no scholarships"....c'mon man!
A while back, I heard from an athlete at American International that there was some shady recruiting going on with trying to get Ezra Mutai from American Int’l to Lee. Lee announced that they signed Ezra as a transfer but then Ezra never ran for Lee
Ok, so name one state in America that hasn’t experienced similar racial violence. Why are you broad-brushing the entire state? This thread is about the job in Morgantown WV— WVU has a huge population of international students that aren’t being attacked in the streets. Seems an awful lot like you just came here to gripe about a job that didn’t work out for you.
Ah, the classic “racism is everywhere so that means we can’t highlight the racism in WV” defense. Nobody is saying that racism is exclusive to WV. It’s just not a great place to live if you’re not a good ole boy. Now back to jobs
The reprimand mentioned is a very minor infraction. Wouldn't classify this as evidence of 'shady' practices. But the Mutai stuff is odd, especially as a D2 XC and 10,000m champion

Whether you think it’s shady or not, it still shows a glimpse of character if you’re willing to knowingly break a rule and hope to get away with it

If you think that someone who doctored a Direct Athletics entries confirmation email to prove an athlete was in the region meet (when they were not), making a big production in the process at that packet pickup, is a minor infraction, I don't know what to say. That coach should have been fired immediately and banned from coaching at the NCAA level. Only admitted what he had done after DA proved there was no way that email was not doctored. No justification for that type of behavior. Seems like a good coach in terms of improving talent but a total bum as character goes.

You sound really upset my guy. How many times did his athletes beat you to be this angry?? He didn’t declare the #1 girl for regionals, called the NCAA to get her entered the day before, they said no. He ran her anyways. He was punished and now it’s over. Compared to the things we hear and see from other coaches this is nothing lololol. Maybe get better at running and focus less on the message boards buddy.
At the end of the day we all make mistakes. Some are more public than others. The #1 runner didn’t affect the outcome of the event, she was DQ’d. Lee still won, she didn’t run nationals or enter the transfer portal. Looks like she was part of their DMR that was all-american indoor and she finished all-american again outdoor.
Morgan always seems like a good dude when we go to his home meets. If he were to make another mistake like this I say to hell with him. But until then, he is a young guy trying to do what’s best for his athletes and clearly didn’t think this one through.
Maybe being with someone like Caryl who micromanages would be ideal for him so he isn’t in complete control and doesn’t have to make as many decisions.
At the end of the day it’s the SEC and they just wanna put points on the board. Morgan having had athletes like Noble and Riter make that do able.
No matter how bad it may seem I’ll always root for the guy.

Some of us may not have been privy to the specifics.
The rule stated that if an athlete was not entered for regionals they could not be added for nationals. The Lee coach knew running her she wouldn’t be able to run nationals either way. For the record they did change the rule at convention this year. If you fail to register someone for regionals you can then re-register them for nationals. A rule I’m pretty sure the Lee coach got passed to keep someone from making the same mistake he did.
It’s about the athletes and doing what’s best for them. The rule as it was previously written was broken, but would not be an issue moving forward for anyone in this situation.

Yeah, the current WVU staff of 3 women and a Canadian head coach agree. It’s a real ol’ boys club.

Not a huge Morgan fan just cause I generally don't enjoy coaches tooting their own horns on social media the way he does but I understand that it's part of the game and you definitely need to promote yourself. However, doctoring an email is insane, like how can you think you'll get away with that hahaha I kind of respect the balls of the man to give it a go tho
