It's because historically, people with physical disabilities have been unable to compete with able-bodied people, so they created their own event to foster competition within that subset of people. It's basically the same reason why they have the Masters. I'm pretty on the fence about whether or not Blake Leeper (you're allowed to call him by his name, by the way, he is still a human being) should be allowed to compete but your reasoning is pretty dumb.

It's on regular nbc television. No cable is required

I want to pull for Blake Leeper as much as the next guy, but what happens when tech improves further and a Paralympian runs a 39 flat 400?

LRC has a lot of ridiculous stances, but being opposed to mechanically aided para-athletes competing in open events and is not one. It's like XY athletes winning XX events. It's a feel-good story until it isn't.

if we have events like ballroom dancing in the Olympics, isn't their room for a para-athlete 400m medal event?

yes, i know there is a Paralympics already. Why not 1 or 2 events crossing over to the biggest stage at the Olympics? people would watch

Leeper is a personable and sympathetic guy and a decent enough athlete, but in recent interviews he is completely unforthcoming about the fact that he has hired a bunch of lawyers and PR people (his "team") to sue the IAAF. Then, he -- or more likely his prosthetics manufacturer -- will hire a bunch of engineers who will publish bogus studies attesting to the neutrality of his appliances.

Couple things about Leeper I'm curious about

Why is his reaction time so horrible?

Do any world class 400m runners have an upper body that looks like his? He doesn't look very athletic.

The way his lower legs/prosthetics swing forward reminds me of people that aren't great sprinters.

I don't get the impression he'd be near as fast as he is now if he had lower limbs naturally.

Given he doesn't really slow down once he gets up to top-speed why doesn't he run the 800m?

A lot of this was hashed out ad nauseum by the SportsScientists.com, compatriots of Pistorius, in the run-up to London 2012. It's interesting reading and probably archived there.

David Epstein may disagree, but consistent, non-fouling reaction time is hardwired, not coachable or acquired through constant practice.

Pistorius was even more unathletic seeming than Leeper, though Leeper does seem to have the basics.

In an 800 race not run entirely in lanes, he'd be a hazard to himself and others. There would be pile-ups everywhere, which may be what the sport needs -- you know, bring in the Roller Derby crowd.
