Oh and Dole Dykes is pretty phenomenal as well.

All aforementioned suck! I am the greatest!
Cobain
[quote]- there's a lack of jazz guitarists mentioned, as well as blues. - the abundance of van halen, young, page(!), mentions, is a dead giveaway most on here are listeners, not players, of guitar, and of the commercial rock variety. wouldn't you say? [quote]
Anybody want to back me or bash me on the BB King vote that I put in earlier? I saw him in concert about a month ago, and he's still going strong at 79 (turns 80 on September 25). If you get the chance to catch him on this tour, definitely go! Funny guy, too.
Jimmy Paige
George Harrison, Angus Young, Slash, Eric Clapton
He's not my favorite but i would definetly pay to see him in concert. I saw him at crossroads last july but would pay to see him by himself. He is incredible. Did we forget Albert Lee. His solo in country boy is incredible. They do not call him Mr. Telecaster for nothing.
Nobody has mentioned Derek Trucks yet. He's only 27 years old and very very accomplished already. He is the new lead guitarist for The Allman Brothers Band for crying out loud. One of the best bands ever. They are the kind of band that when you see them live they play like you are the only one in the crowd. Crazy solo's and extended versions of songs. His slide technique is crazy. I saw him at crossroads and i am going to see him with santana and at bonaroo this summer. If anybody has gone to bonaroo some info on that would be awesome. What is it like, supplies needed, bad and good experiences?

That's because he wasn't born when this thread was started.
Pat Metheny. 17 grammy awards.

What happened to Warren Haynes? Seriously.
Warren Haynes pretty awesome but too unknown for many people.
Bassist = Claypool
Drummer = Pert (insane)
Guitar = Reynolds

If we were talking about the best technically speaking, then I'd say:
Guitar -- Yngwie Malmsteen
Bass -- Victor Wooten
Drums -- Vinnie Paul
If we are indeed talking about the "greatest", I'd have to second Jimmy Hendrix. But I'm a big metal fan, so I'm also gonna throw Randy Rhodes in there. And I'm gonna be really gay here and say that one of the best CURRENT guitarists is John Mayer. If you don't agree then you haven't heard him live.
**And who ever said Dave Matthews is ummmm....well you know. I know I said John Mayer, but Mayer is a far better guitarist than Matthews.
Woooooow. I can't believe I said Vinnie Paul was the best technical drummer. I mean I made that comment almost 3 years ago, but even then I should have known better. I must have been on a heavy metal kick or something. I still think that VP is a very good drummer and one of the best metal drummers, but you know.
And then I go on to say that John Mayer is the best current guitar player. Again, John Mayer is a good guitar player in the blues-pop realm, but geez.
I'm still gonna go with Hendrix as arguably the greatest electric man ever. And Randy Rhoads as arguably the greatest heavy metal guitarist. But I'm sure if I check this thread in a few years I'll be shocked at my own musical immaturity.
And while we're at it, I would also like to retract half of the statements I made on this thread from 3 years ago.
Steve Morse is a far better technical guitarist than any mentioned including Malmsteen.
