Running, in general, is a “fringe sport”, as has been defined by the media. This kind of negative attention helps to push that fringe over the edge of the abyss. This will help to shut down a few more collegiate Track and Field programs that produce no funds for their respective universities, and drain valuable scholarships from “money-producing” sports. This is just more ammunition to shoot down collegiate running.

As someone who writes regularly for the Times (but has no direct knowledge of this story), I can guarantee that this is not true. The Times does not pay for stories.
That being said, it looks like they got suckered into publishing a bit of a PR puff piece, judging from the damning details in Scott Douglas's RW piece.

Why is it that doping in Track pushes it over the edge, but the INSANE doping that's going on in the NFL and MLB don't do anything to the public's interest? Remember a few years back when every good hitter was on steroids?

Totally agree on the insane doping in the NFL and MLB. But the Nielson ratings show that people want their NFL and MLB and not any running event, of any type, anywhere, anyway. That's reality.
Ran an evening track meet with Hesch about 9 years back. He raced at 9:00pm and then ran a 12 miler at midnight, claiming he needed to get in his long run before his 6:00am flight the next day. Definitely thought it was weird at the time, but this makes things pretty clear. I'd say he was doping in 2003 and has continued since, and like the cyclist of the time needed to run round the clock in order to avoid cardiac arrest and keep his thick blood flowing.
Some of the comments assume that Hesch's teammate was a guy........got a feeling that it isn't.
I saw him bitching at a race in Riverside back last November when there wasn't any prize money (there was $$$ the year before) and demanded his entry fee back. Should have read the race flyer! He was a real jerk about it, too; even complained about not getting a free breakfast like the year before.

You get no credit for "coming clean." Like an above poster said, he only fessed up because he got caught.
What doesn't add up is how did he live off of racing for only $500 to $1500 on weekends in hollywood? If he only made 40,000 in two years thats really not enough money for him to be flying everywhere and living in CA. I guess he could pull it off if all the race directors were paying for his flights. But making $500 is not a lot when he was probably paying $250-$300 per flight when he raced out of the state.
The argument could definitely be made that he's been doping since his "transition" from triathlons to competitive distance running in '99. I remember once talking to a couple of guys who had trained with him a bit from the old Farm Team. They said something jokingly to the effect that he had amazingly made up a whole winter of base in 2 weeks of training.

You can race every Saturday and Sunday and still work through the week.

There have been several posts regarding the legitimacy of runners in California being suspect because of the proximity to Tijuana. Let me set the record straight: There are TONS of good runners who work hard and do not do that. I worked my ass off along the Fullerton Trails for years trying to qualify for the trials--never did. No big deal. I know others who did though, and they did it without resorting to Tijuana Pharmacies.
So-Cal is a big place with tons and tons of people, so of course there will be more opportunities for cheating, but not all of us hard working runners do the injections.

Christian, you are not a 4 minute miler, sub 14 5k runner, or olympic qualifier. Congrats to your supplier though, he now gets credit for providing a tool drugs that ran that fast. Maybe in the corrupt doctor EPO community that means something. So you're no longer allowed to name drop, after all it's no longer Christian Hesch- 4 minute miler and Christian Hesch- Olympic Qualifier, it is Christian Hesch's Drugs- 4 minute mile serum and Christian Hesch's Drugs- Olympic Qualifying drugs. So now maybe your doctor meets up with other doctors and brags about how good his drugs are; it makes a helluva lot more sense than you ever talking about your running accomplishments again. It sucks that what you obviously care most about in life isn't even yours, it's your drugs. You are to dense to realize that, but if you were smarter I would feel bad that you now realize that your accomplishments that you love aren't actually your accomplishments. I imagine it would be like if I woke up and saw the life that I love and have crafted for myself actually belonged to someone else and i was worthless.
