5000: Butzler, Spain, Salukombo
This is going to be an interesting race given that 5 of the top 7 entries are from guys who will be running it fresh, whereas usually most people are coming back from an earlier event for the 52. Butzler was the only guy who was close to being in Spain's league for the indoor 5k and I think it will be similar outdoors, but given that Butzler will be fresh and has a nasty kick (not to mention his epic leg speed), I think he'll get the win. Salukombo has looked real good this season and could be up there as well, though he hasn't done that well at nationals in the past (was last in the indoor mile final) so its hard to say. Could see Berube or really any of the other guys who ran an auto up there as well making things interesting, but I'm guessing people will be watching Spain and Butzler to see what they do.
I met Salukombo yesterday while running at a Metropark north of Columbus, Ohio. Very nice guy. I wish him the best this Saturday.
Spain with the kick! Awesome!
Lead splits (approx)
400m 74
1600m 4:52
3200m 4:54 9:46 (Kleinsasser out to a big lead)
4800m 4:58 14:44 (Pack catches Kleinsasser in latter half of this mile)
6400m 4:45 19:30 (Spain surged, leads until 2laps to go, Breitbach only one to go with)
8000m 4:42 24:12
9600m 4:44 28:56 (Breitbach passes with 2 laps to go, Spain latches)
10,000m 1:01 29:58 (Spain re-passes with ~150m to go for good)
3rd Burnstein 30:30 (estimate)
4th Heymann 30:35 (estimate)
What was up with the guy that finished last in like 33:20?
I would like to respond to your comment on Jackson brainerd: I think that it is a bit ridiculous that you are bashing brained for an NCAA sanctioned altitude conversion. And secondly he ran a time last year at occidental that would have qualified him for nationals anyways so really it isn't two years in a row and it is common knowledge that he was injured both late in cross and into the winter. He is obviously talented and deserving of running at nationals after coming in 18th in xc as a sophomore and then not losing to any d3 competition through regionals in xc this year. So why don't you do some research before you make wildly outlandish comments. If you or a teammate of yours feel slighted about not being fast enough to go to nationals maybe you should try running at altitude before you make accusations of the altitude conversion being "rildiculous" thank you and have a nice evening.
he doesn't exactly help himself by running 4:02 today, does he?
Ya because the times on a day like today mean so much...The first heat went out in 2:14 or so. Ya he didn't qualify but for you to base anything on times when both races went out in 3:00 for the 1100 meters is just plain stupid.
No it isn't. He ran one of the slowest times on the day.
if you think Pavlus will beat Gossels in the 10 you are sorely mistaken. I watched her jog a 35:18 this past weekend.
did anyone watch gossels tonight she was jogging. pavlus isn't even in her league. 5:27 last mile like nothing. too bad dear got hurt so badly they were gonna be redic.
What happened to Dear? I heard the announcers say someone was down on the track, but they didn't give any names or details.

you're funny. Too bad you don't know the whole story. Pavlus would have made Gossels look like a child if she was remotely close to 100%. Probably the best race Pavlus has ever run given the circumstances.
Does Hulleberg become the only d3 cross country champion to never make All-American outside of that one win? He's thrown down like 4 10/11 place finishes at indoors and outdoors in a row. Led his team to a national title, so not too disappointing of a career I wouldn't think, but I assume every other xc champ has made AA at least one other time?
I heared Dear had a stress fracture prior to this race and then during the race it fractured all the way which is why she fell to the ground.

Here's a link to an interesting article about Salukombo:
http://www.newarkadvocate.com/article/20110526/SPORTS/1052603494 guys at 32+ minutes is not helping d3's case on a national level. what the hell is that? a slow pace early on and guys are still going out the back by 5k. come on
not bad for a tempo wrote:

The best part about this was that when Harrington got lapped you could see him start encouraging Breitbach. Witkowski looked like he might have said something as well.
What has troubled Pavlus?! I heard she's been really sick... anemia or something? Definitely hasn't been at the top of her game this outdoor season, but given the circumstances ran one heck of a race last night and I'm sure she'll be All-American in the steeple tonight as well... she's a gamer.

Shit happens at end-of-season meets. I guarantee you're going to see slow ass times out of the D1 regionals today and at nationals. Last year there were 3 guys over 30 minutes at D1s.
