Yep, on 6/13/1959. That was the 15th fastest mile by a U.S. high school boy that year including Archie San Romani at 4:08.9 to become the first under 4:10. San Romani was from Wichita East HS which also produced the first sub 4:00 by Jim Ryun.

Jsully, I defer to your citation of 15th rather than 10th as I am out of town and have no "no source document" handy. Memory servrs that he's the last guy listed in the end-of-the year T&FN list, so I sort of guessed it was 10th.
He was 2 years ahead of me and pretty much idolized by one and all. A very fine guy to everyone.
