True, but they're also not yet a college runner. High schoolers rarely get opportunities to run track 5ks. Most HS 5K records have been set in the summer, and I see no problem with leaving it that way.
Has anyone asked German about the possibility of a summer 5K? He's got to want to try, just to see what he's capable of.

I wouldn't get too hard on typos when guys here are banging out posts. The kid has put himself there with the elite, the guy had that right. He also had an interesting point about the order of events. Any other states out there still run the 3200 before the 1600?

Once you have gone thru high school graduation ceremony you are no longer in high school.
i would agree with you if this were about MEDALS, but it's not - it's about FAST TIMES.
Also, I don't know what the big deal is about high schoolers/just graduated doing this. It's not like the professionals are going to somehow cheat them to a fast time. They still have to move their own legs.

Fernandez was pretty hard on his competition. He'll be as big a household name as Melendez was a few years back.
I've seen tons of typos on this board and every other board out there. I'm more amused by the jerk-offs who plagiarize other's posts or passages from articles and books and claim the writing as their own.
Post high school greatness skews the high school perception. I do not base on winning accolades...a NCAA champion winning in 13:55 for 5K does not equal a great performance, I would have to rank by high school performance only, as follows:

in my humble opinion, in terms of effort these are the top seven mens performances of all-time. My prediction for Nike Outdoor Nationals is as follows: Luke takes the lead from the gun pushes through 63 second opening quarter, Fernandez close behind, Fernandez retakes lead in closing steps of 800m crossing in 2:06, Puskedra tucks in behind Fernandez who pushes through a 64 second lap crossing 1200m in 3:10. Puskedra looks strong as Fernandez leads from the front crossing mile in 4:13, HE WANTS THE RECORD!!!, two laps go by with Puskedra and Fernandez trading laps, 64,66 the announcers chant, Lowe hangs ominously 15 yards back...but looks good. With two laps to go the scoreboard reads 6:24, in an instant Puskedra tries to shake Fernandez mounting an unbelievable push, could this be Centrowitz/Forys #II? Puskedra is laboring, but wouldn't anyone, as he and Fernandez are abreast with a lap to go, 7:27!!! Holy shit, they could break 8:30!!! Fernandez unleashes a surge against the near 7 foot stride of Puskedra as the fight for every last ounce of life from their laboring bodies, 7:57 3K!!! and they are still abreast, down the home stretch puskedra's massive frame locks up, but he doesn't give up, the fluid frame of the efficient Fernandez edges ahead as they cross the line.....for a 59 second final lap, the scoreboard reads as follows:
1. German Fernandez 8:27.56
2. Luke Puskedra 8:28.23
3. Colby Lowe 8:39.96
The age of high school distance running will never be the same. Believe it, you can achieve it!!!!

Eugene, OR - Luke Puskedra, who signed with the Oregon Ducks on March 18th, will be attempting to break the U.S. 2-mile record this weekend in a special invitational race at the Prefontaine Classic.
The senior will be paced through the race by at least one rabbit who will take him out at a blistering 4:15 per mile pace with the goal of running somewhere in the 8:30 range. The current high school two-mile record was set by Jeff Nelson of Burbank High in 1979 at 8:36.3.
Puskedra ran a PR of 8:49.58 to win the Nike Indoor Nationals earlier this year on a 200 meter non-banked indoor track. Some of the nation-leading high school 2-mile times over the last decade that he bested were: Josh McDougal, 8:50.40, 2004; Galen Rupp, 8:54.45, 2004; Chris Solinsky, 8:56.26, 2003; Dathan Ritzenhein, 8:50.4, 2001; and Andy Powell, 8:50.29, 1999. This will be Puskedra's first appearance at Hayward Field.

Hmm, I would say a 2:14 / 1:52 is an all-time performance in HS. Not an all-time "time" but an all-time performance without a doubt.

Didn't Fernandez open the season with a triple on the dirt of something like 9:12, 4:10 and 1:53 or something like that? I hope I'm not too far off on those times.
I mean, first meet outdoors on dirt. And you can't say he was peaking early, as we witnessed yesterday.
He's had about 4 doubles and/or triples that have been for the record books considering the circumstances of where and when they were run and the lack of any help in any of them.
what if the winningest runners for say a decade (early 1990s) run slower than those of another who have a few great performances but are not as winsome because there is more great competition (late 1960s). would the early 1990s runners be greater because they got lucky and benefited from a running performance trough, or or would the 1960s runners be greater because their raw performances are more stellar? I side with burn twice as bright but as half as long as the criterion for determined the greatest. if a high schooler dropped a single 3:51 today and never ran another step in their life, i would rank that as one of the greatest runners ever in high school.by the way, was bob beamon one of the greatest ever or not based on 29 2 1/2?

Are you an idiot? Winning a championship is wonderful, going out at 5:30 mile pace for two miles before blasting home in 3:55 might seem cool but in my opinion NOT worthy of being a greatest performance of all-time.
What a moron!!! That shit happens every year in the NCAA's, jog, jog, jog, sprint, you watch a 5k and end up watching a bunch of guys prepare for a mile. The fact is, any of the elites should be able to go out easy and run home in sub four for a win if they went out near five minutes the first two miles, in that case 13:55 with a 3:55 last mile is not impressive.
Now going out and hanging and banging and running 12:58 i.e. Bob Kennedy, that gets remembered, going out and running 8:36.3 i.e. Jeff Nelson, thats the stuff legends are made of. Noone remembers the kid who goes out in 5:00 and doubles back with a 4:10, thats called BAD racing, or as Puskedra puts it, "Not running an honest race."
So go ahead and keep preaching this crap, we are talking all-time performances, there is nothing secret about running 3:53 or 3:51, its balls to the wall from the start, there is no other way to end up with that time. You want to be remembered, go out and bust a nut making history.
5:30 pace? that would make the 5k almost a 15:30... he said winning time in 13:55. Running the last 1600m in 3:55 would be an awesome performance, just not a time. German greatest high school double. If this wasn't his first year injury free then he'd would already be a legend. After NON he will have solidified his status as an all time great.
Maybe I need to reiterate: a single 3:51 mile would trump a four year career of mediocre national showings when it comes to declaring someone an alltime great. I'm talking high-school here.
Likewise, at the pro level, a single 3:39 mile would do the same, even if the person didn't ever run again. If Noah Nyeng hadn't won his 1500m Olympic gold, he might still have been claimed a close to all-time great with his single 3:43.40.
I frankly don't see any value to winning, at the high school level, a whole bunch of titles in 15-15:20 versus 13:40s with no title. Titles are nice, but slow times over a mediocre field lacking the guts to run fast are worthless.
