Kirk Burrows won the 1500, 5000, 10,000 that year...and in pretty decent competition...never did anything beyond his JuCo days though I don't think...

Our 6th man gets 12th, we had a very good team. Joe Dodson had some real talent but he didn't want to work too hard. Along the same lines was Craig Carter. Probably one of the most gifted runners ever at SM South but he too didn't not work too hard at it.PS I see Yael A. in some race results now, he has a son that runs. I would be willing to bet several people have run fast enough to make it on the 4 mile list above. Here are some notable performances from the Trolley Run in KC. Not sure where some of these guys are originally from.

Actually it looks like you only had 4. There's a NorthWest in there at 9. The next West guy was 13th.

Ok, 'Sunflower State', you got me to digging out a scrapbook. Here is an oddball assortment of results from a summer meet at SMS in July of '72. The clipping, from the Johnson Co. Sun newspaper, which had a frustrating habit of only putting Johnson Co. athletes in their results, so the places for a race would skip over non Jo.Co. guys, like they didn't exist.

Charlie, do you remember all those summer meets at Southeast High, over by the Zoo and at SMS and the Golden Trail Track meet at Raytown? The Meet of Miles at Truman High and then SMW? The 2 X-C meets at Swope Park in early August, which were a good baramoter of early season fitness level and who actully ran in July...lol....I remember SMS and Raytown South always had guys running in midseason form at those 2 meets. Especially Eric the Flea. Do these meets still exist? Or the Firecracker 5k, on the track at SME on the 4th of July? That was the last race I ran in KC, before moving to Santa Monica in the summer of '77.

Looks like we jumped into alot of events at this one.

I would run all of them and get worse and worse as my fitness level kept fading, as the summer progressed, as I wasn't doing much training in the middle of the summer...lol...

Although we only came home from state with the 2nd place trophy, we beat SM West by 20 points at state. Schmidt always used to yell that state meet was the only one that counted. And getting no worse than 3rd at state over a 18 year period, I guess he did know how to peak his team.

Schmidt was the 'best'. I guess Van Rose at SMNW is the Schmidt of 'today'?

Yes Jerry I graduated Valley Falls Kans. HS 1972. The 23:41 was a winning time at Our Home XC course in Pittsburg Ks. I will say that our Coach Dave Suenram was very accurate on this course . Ron Tabb of club Midwest set that race up going out in 4:30.John Prashunn of S.M.S. pushed me the whole race this was Fall 1976. I never got into the road running scene.

A fairly recent Kansas college grad who has been solid would be Dale Dexter. He's from Hoyt, KS, was an All-American in xc/track at Fort Hays St. Ran about 3:52 for 1500m, 14:26 for 5000m and 29:51 for 10,000m, has since run a couple 2:24 marathons. Pretty solid from smalltown Kansas, also won Wichita River Run 10k last year. Both he and Nate Wadsworth (who was a very good runner for Wichita St) run for the KC Smoke now.

Ryan Clive-Smith was one of my athletes from Kansas State and was from South Africa...

I will havae to check out my PR's but as I look at several of those records I know of several people, including myself, who have run faster times than those listed...although I am sure it would be a monumental effort to list everyones PR's and where they ran them...

No but ran agaisnt him often...I have often what ever happened to him...he was a SR. my Soph. year...

I thought of him. Just hadn't got around to mentioning it. What is Matt Noonan (Baldwin HS, Mizzou) up to? He's still less than a year out of college & I imagine going to grad school, but I think he has the ability to be a very good road runner.
