Mary Cain makes more allegations: Claims her HS coach took a perverse interest in the sex lives of his female runners

I don’t feel like reading through 160 posts to find what I’m sure has already been said before me saying it, but Mary Cain sounds like a big crybaby. She has millions from the settlement from Nike and AlSal. She is like the Greta Thunberg of distance running. She complains about everything. Plenty of other people have been through what she has, and they have overcome it without the need for playing the victim card the rest of their lives. I know there were some health issues, but it’s been what? Ten freaking years? Who forced Mary to not do everything possible to improve her running during that time? Nobody. Sheesh, she’s still only 29. If Burrito Queen can make a comeback at 33 and place 4th in the world last year, then Mary could at least give it another go and see what she can do. Stop all the whining, resentment, and blaming for things that happened years ago. The past will never happen again. If you want to help other young women in the situation you were in great, the world needs more of that. You want to represent and compete for Ireland, great, go for it and train your heart out. Stop with the virtue signaling and blaming everybody for everything. It’s over. We get it. AlSal is ruined, her HS coach is a nobody anyway, and you’re 29. Time to move on.

This is the part that baffles me. Her dad is an anesthesiologist. If he had just googled "Alberto Salazar" at that time, he would have easily been able to find info about Alberto's exploitation of grey area PEDs, and his reputation for experimenting on his athletes. How does a physician see that and think it's a good idea to put his 15 year old daughter in that kind of situation?

My experience with physicians is that they can have an astonishing lack of common sense. What appears as things that most people wouldn’t even begin to overlook is outright ignored by medical people. They can remove tumors from brains and keep somebody asleep during surgery without pain, but they’ll leave their wallet and keys in their car unlocked at night. People are strange.

Apparently she said Whetmore hit on Kara in her book as well. Kara specifically addressed this very sternly as 100% false in this weeks podcast.

Maybe and maybe not, but she is now known more for being a whistleblower than for anything she has accomplished as a runner. It’s overshadowed any talent she had or has. I would feel bad if my wealth and fame only accrued because of suing and complaining. Doesn’t she have any determination to actually earn something and prove what she’s capable of? She’s just such a disappointment.

Putting off step 1 is a bad idea. Even the PhD/MD students at my university take step 1 then go into their research yr.

That's what I've always wondered. Was Mary Cain's adult body just not compatible with being a world class athlete? Not just weight, but change in biomechanics?

Obviously frustrating to get that close to the top, only for it to slip away, but ultimately, no one's fault, nothing to be done about it, and a need to be make the adjustment to being grateful for what she had, even if it was destined not to last...

So if her HS coach took a “perverse” interest in the sex lives of his female runners, one must ask: is there such a thing as a “wholesome” interest in the sex lives of his female runners? Or is any interest a problem? Not taking sides here, but why call it perverse? Any interest might seem a bit odd.

Yes, I want details. Is there any in the book? I can imagine a perverse interest to be obsessed with details of sex acts while a wholesome interest might be to be politely responsive and providing a listening ear as needed to comments initiated by the athlete.

My god, now Kara Goucher, the queen bee of virtue signaling, is claiming there are things in Mary's book that are total BS? This memoir is clearly going off the rails in every way possible. Shame the mainstream media is too cowardly to review this book honestly and see it for what it is.

It's shocking that Cain would assert this allegation in print without verification. Did the book editor(s) let her down? Apparently Goucher was not contacted prior to publication to confirm or deny the rumor.

Maybe the publisher’s strategy was to let her fail and capitalize on the cringe spectacle. People have a perverse urge to keep feasting their eyes on an impending train wreck.

She may make it through med school unless she’s already feeling bullied by professors and colleagues. Say she matches. I can’t see her working the crazy hours that residency demands. She will have to be able to deal with all kinds of personalities among the arrogant staff physicians, backstabbing residents and hospital staff that doesn’t think she walks on water. Don’t think her ego can handle that life. Next thing you know she’ll say they’re all bullying her and quit and write another book “It’s Not Anout the Medicine”

I started the thread yesterday about how I read in the WSJ review of Cain's memoir that Cain claims her HS coach took a perverse interest in her sex life. Today I've read another review in RW and find out she's accused Salazar of looking at her exposed breasts?

Yet another day. Yet another sexual allegation.

I guess I'm going to have to buy this book. I really didn't want to. But I'm supposed to believe she has like the 3 worse HS coaches ever and then Salazar as well?

There clearly isn't a zero percent chance that she was the problem and the common denominator here, but at least the RW reviewer had some skepticism to begin with.

But why would her breasts be exposed? Someone who has read the book, can you write exactly what she has alleged by Salazar and HS coach in terms of sex?

If you begin a statement like this with “apparently,” maybe just don’t share it. This is factually incorrect. Mary’s book says that Alberto told her that as part of the reason she couldn’t go to CU if she wanted to continue working with Alberto.
