Well, to be truthful, Trump supporters have been being idiots online (and everywhere else) for a decade now. So people are used to it.

Thinking back on it (it's been many years), what exactly was the motive for Ray Hobbs getting shot? Simple robbery? Revenge for embarassing the Whammer?

An interesting theory about the motive is that it may have been a Selena/John Lennon sort of fan obsession. That is probably more realistic than furry/antifa gamer subculture.

It was Harriet, the crazy lady who had an obsession with the Whammer and planned to kill him. She had an interesting role in the film because she wanted to rid the game of baseball of all arrogance and hubris, something she thought ruined the game and led people to play it for the wrong reasons. So when Hobbs said he was the "best there ever was," she knew she had to kill him. Interestingly, Hobbs saved the Whammer's life when he struck him out at the fair because it humbled him. It gave Harriet a new target, and also gave the book/film a solid Icarian plot device.
