LRC. This thread was initially titled, "Yared Nuguse is Gay: Hard launch post on Insta"
3/30 update: We are closing this thread to new posts. I did an ok job of following it for a few pages and moderating it but now am 10+ pages behind. The thread has served its purpose - the news has gotten out and people have reacted to it - we don't need pages and pages of the same discussion.
Athletics is meritocratic. Who crosses the line first wins.
DEI would mean that athletes would be assigned time handicaps and that certain athletes would be excluded because of quotas.
This isn't actually what DEI means. This is what right-wing, racial supremacy nutjobs want you to think DEI is. DEI is about creating an environment and systems to get more people of diverse backgrounds into a field with the assumption that great talent can come from anywhere. It is not about quotas, allowing under-qualified people in roles with specific qualifications, etc.
Nuguse, Nico, Cunningham, Hiltz and others coming out publicly is effectively a form of DEI as it encourages more athletes who identify as LGBTQ to continue to participate in sport. Stopping abuse and discrimination against LGBTQ athletes on athletics/running teams and in athletics/running forums (competitions, etc) is also a form of DEI because those athletes now have an environment in which they can succeed like other athletes.
The reality is that great talent can come from anywhere - regardless of race, sexuality, income, religion, etc. We should be creating environments that allow anyone to succeed if they have the drive and talent. That's how you create a truly successful running community long-term. The same can be said for any sport, business or institution.
So is letting an incompetent drunk wife beater run a cabinet department a form of DEI, to inspire other incompetent drunks to aspire to such heights?
The 7.6% (1 in 13) from the Gallup poll doesn’t necessarily contradict the 12.5% (1 in 8) figure.
Self-reporting on a phone interview might have severe methodological biases (e.g. underreporting due to lack of trust regarding anonymity, etc.). Furthermore, 6.8% of the interviewed decline to respond on questions related to their sexual orientation, and we can safely assume that among them a significant percentage would not self-identify as purely heterosexual. I am also puzzled by the Gallup survey as it is mixing apples and oranges by mixing sexual orientation with gender identification, e.g. most trans people are heterosexuals and belong to both heterosexual and LGBTQ+ categories. A major difficulty in those kind of surveys is also to correctly assess the percentage of bisexuals as many people may have some bisexual traits while remaining mainly or exclusively heterosexual in their sexual life, thus reporting very differently depending on the exact question.
Anyway, I don’t think any of this matters in a thread about Yared Nuguse personal life. I just wish him and his partner all the best and look forward seeing this very inspiring and sympathetic athlete on the track very soon.

I think it's obvious that Hegseth is not a DEI anything since he was put in a role he clearly has no qualification for - doesn't meet the standard I laid out. He's just a classified-info leaking idiot put there because he represents what Trump thinks makes a good soldier (misogynistic mouth breather who disdains anyone different from him and won't hesitate to be cruel) and is someone who is first and foremost loyal to Trump above anything else, including the Constitution and security of the nation.
Again, the people complaining about DEI actually don't know what DEI is.
Coming out and saying this is like calling for a press conference to announce that you prefer chocolate ice cream over vanilla. It is absolutely a non-factor in my thinking and supporting him has a fellow runner. I wish him all the happiness and joy this world in life can offer keep running fast keep working out and being strong more power to you, bro!
Not a surprise but I feel bad for him as this is a very toxic climate with Trump. As more elite runners are announcing (LGBTQ+ specifically) -- it does paint a bit of a target on the sport and the athlete with respect to any funding, sponsorship deals,etc...
Major brands are pulling back from DEI efforts and might feel inclined to cancel sponsorships of athletes like Nico Young and Nuguse.
Not my wish but this is just the harsh reality of the Trump 2.0 era as companies bend the knee to him.
First of all who cares. But I mean wasn’t it obvious? Taylor swift fan? lol
It wasn't obvious to me. But I don't care. What consenting adults do is not my business. Happy for him that he has found someone to love and who loves him.
I wish them well in his endeavours; and while I don't follow long distance unless it is Faith Kipyegon, I do recall seeing him competing at the Paris Olympics.

WTF. An Olympic athlete who went thru the qualification process came out triumphant represented his country, would be considered DEI? How do you arrive at such? Do you, chump and the rest of the idiots know what DEI means?

Stop it.
Yared and Nico are good. There's only the one weirdo here who has anything bad to say about Nico.
