The brutal truth is the sport is duller than drying paint. No track stadium would draw many fans.
Part of the reason is the Olympics, which reduced meets to pageantry that looks like something special on TV but is boring AF in person.
It's boring AF in person because of the relentlessly positive vibe, like parents watching their kids at a school play. That's not what sports fans want. They want to hate the opposing team, boo the refs, get the whole experience, not just cheer.
99% of track is school teams. At least.
and yet in europe stadiums fill up for track and field.
Europeans are weirdos, and this thread is about building a track in America.
Las Vegas is the best place. Doha has an outdoor stadium with A/C at field level that works very well in 50 degree weather.
Yes, I attended Worlds in Doha in 2019 in that air conditioned stadium. If Vegas would build the stadium with AC, that could work. I go to Vegas every year for a week for a work conference; while it's not my favourite place to visit, and I am in and out, getting there is not that difficult and it certainly has enough hotel rooms and events to make a visit bearable.
Vegas would work.
I like Eugene. Wonderful track fans. When I visit a town for a meet, I want to find nice places to run. I found nice trails in Eugene. After all, it's Track Town.
I've gone for some runs in Vegas. Totally sucks. I ran the Vegas marathon. Came down in the early morning to catch the bus. Drunk gambling addicts, clouds of stale cigarette smoke. 6:00 AM and people looked at us through foggy, glazed eyes like we were from another planet, which, in a way, we were. Probably the unhealthiest town in America. Track Town? - you gotta be joking.
What fans? This is a sport that has no identity. No true professional league or standards to actually consider your self a "pro". The reality is that it does not matter where you have it. Nobody showing up.

Indy is a sport made to host events. The us olympic swimming trials are here and we went all out to build two pools in Lucas oil stadium.
indy has SO many places to stay, eat, things to do. It really makes the most sense. I mean they literally use to host the trials here.
We just built a new indoor facility with the goal of hosting USAs indoor (according to USATF, who they worked directly with) NCAA D2 indoor is gonna be hosted there I think next year?
ALL ROADS LEAD TO INDY.
also yeah the weather, blah,blah,blah.
hasn’t the weather not been great in the PNX the last couple of summers??
