Southlake Carroll returns: Leonard - 14:55 5k XC / State Champ / All-American - soph Bullard - 15:09 5k XC - Jr Cords - 9:21 3200 / 15:21 5k - Jr Severson - 9:22 3200 / 15:38 5k - Jr Fuller - 9:48 3200 / 16:16 5k - soph If their 5th man steps up, they can make podium again.
yeah this is my preseason #3.
The return the following speed ratings. With a program as deep and notable as southlake carroll, I am sure they will have no problem finding another runner that can run in the 180s.
They have a likely sub 9 guy, a 4:18, a 4:27, a sub 10 freshman from last year, and a boy that has a 164 speed rating to his name. They return 182, 174, 173, 171, 164 from last year, as well as a freshman that ran 4:50 (mile)/9:48 (3k) in indoors and a 16:58 in cross. They also have a 4:57 indoor 8th grader coming in. Other freshman ran 17:02 and 17:09.
Given that the 4:18 and 4:27 were at elevation, and the 4:27 just set the Simplot games freshman record, I think they absolutely should be considered potentially a top 5 team. Obviously, we'll need to see how the rest of the track season plays out, but they are very legit. Remember that this is a team that failed to qualify for state in 2019 and 2020, got 8th in 2021 at the Idaho State meet, was 7th at NXR in 2022, and won NXR in 2023. They had a coaching change and the team has massively improved every year and they have a pipeline in North Idaho Distance Project, which is run by their coach.
ngl doesn't sound very impressive at all for #3 in the nation. I thought they would be better than that.
Doesn’t really strike me as the #3 team in the nation. Herriman and Niwot will be the top 2, and Southlake Carroll returns 191, 183, 180, 177, and another 9:48 3200, which is a better top 5 than Coeur D’Alene.
Belen Jesuit Prep FL returns 192, 179, 174, 173, 166, which is also better than Coeur D’Alene.
CDA will have a very nice top 4 (Max CS, Wyatt C, Zack CS, and Mitchell R)
All capable of sub 15:45 next fall on the NXR Eagle Island Course. The biggest question will be can Rohlinger or Heule drop a big chunk of time to get in around 16:05-16:10…if they do that’s an NXN lock and probably a Top 5 NXN finish because of the strength of their Top 4.
Crater will have 2 guys that can go sub 15 on the NXR Eagle Island Course (Tayvon K and Josiah T) will they find another guy or two to break 15:50 and a fifth that can run 16:05-16:10 on the NXR course? If so, they are a lock with CDA and a dangerous podium threat at NXN if they have two legit low sticks (these guys have run fast indoor 3ks on par with Gorze’s junior year times) Gorze went on to place Top 3 at NXN individually so these guys could score really low team points for Crater.
Kitchen and Tostenson are both capable of placing in the top 10 at NXN.
Crater also returns 2 more juniors who ran a 16:04 and 16:31 at NXR NW. They also return another freshman who got to run at NXN with the team because Hellman had a health issue. They also return 2 other sub-17 freshmen and 3 sub-17 sophomores.

They also return 2 more guys who weren’t varsity but ran a 4:25 mile (Field) and 4:28 mile (G Schmitt) earlier this season. The 4:28 guy is a freshman brother of one of the guys you mentioned here. So they’ll have a solid 6&7 in case something happens to one of their top 5. Could also be used for displacement and tiebreaker purposes.
A regional powerhouse in the NW is having some drama on the Letsrun thread for their state’s track season. Someone is posting language criticizing Mormons and other Christian based faiths for adding gospels to the Bible, which they are saying is the complete gospel. The language mirrors language the coach has posted on Strava about other religions being false religions, and the poster has displayed some inside knowledge of that team. You can put two and two together on who that individual might be.
The kicker? The team is majority Mormon. I believe that 5 or 6 of their top 7 are LDS. That, added to rumors that some runners are now training on their own or that there is some sort of rebellion going on with their team, leads me to believe that we might see their team begin to fade.

Probably don't name names, because then people report and it gets deleted. But I would say that most people's first guess is usually their best guess.
Ventura boys team finished lower at the state meet merge in 2023 than in 2022, even after returning almost everyone. They will have trouble qualifying for the state meet in 2024.

They had 1 of their expected scorers sidelined by injury almost all of the season and Fasthorse had his one bad race of the year at state (possible injury as well)
They would have won and had a longshot NXN chance if one of those two things didn't happen.
Doesn't mean anything for their chances in 2024, but it justifies their drop off in 2023 state.
