In "The Lap Count" this morning https://www.thelapcount.com/p/gobbling-milesKyle reports on Ethan Hermann getting DQed for an unreal reason of the coach handing him a bottle AT the aid station. Is this a BS DQ or what? Am I reading the rules right that b/c it wasn't a volunteer handing out things at the aid station and his coach picked up a bottle to hand him, that he should be DQed, ruining a great amateur running story? The coach was obviously at fault here and should have known the rules and just stood away from the aid station. Also, what person reports this to course/event officials? Just feel bad for the kid, seems like he worked hard, ran a great race, and won't get an official invite to the Olympic Trails because of a technicality that really didn't give him an unfair advantage. If anything, dock him 10 seconds and let him get in. The only penalization being a DQ seems so harsh in our sport.

Let me help you out...

In general there are 3 steps to participating in the trials after you hit the trials standard...

1. Entry

2. Qualifying

3. Declaration

1. The following is an Entry list (doesn't mean you qualified). Ethan entered his time to USATF whether he thought he had a chance, or not. https://usatf.sport80.com/public/events/148006/entries/38?bl=wizard

2. USAT takes a looks at those Entries, and determines who Qualified. Qualifiers can be seen on the following page, and/or are notified directly. Ethan is not on this Qualifying list:

3. Those who Qualified have the chance to Declare that they are participating at the trials. The following page is where you can find Declared athletes so far: https://www.orlando2024trials.com/athletes/declared-entrants/

In short, Ethan entered but did not qualify for the trials.
