I feel like this has all been blown a bit out of proportion. If we separate the photos from the comments made in response to this emma girl, they ARE artistically advanced and have a very stylistic element that is fresh and appealing. Throughout the posts I saw that seemed to have been a part of this series, the photographer was clearly aiming towards a storytelling element that depicts a consistent character who plays the role of someone who is getting bullied. It is strange to me that Emma is going on a rampage about these photos as if they are not simply portraying very symbolic and dated scenes of an early 2000s high school scene and are instead portraying a ruthless campaign against women? Where in the world did she pull that from?
I also saw (before the comments were deleted on the post) that the camper who was the subject in these photos expressed that she was not uncomfortable and that the photos were intended to be conceptually creative. I am confused as to how Emma got away with changing the entire narrative of this shoot while gaining clout for herself. The model even voiced that she was fine with the shoot, so why continue to push this narrative of misogyny? Also keep in mind, this shoot was created by a young photographer who was pulling inspiration from iconic y2k movies. That being said, nothing can excuse the homophobic comments made in response to Emma's initial criticism.
Yet, I personally do not think this account was run by the photographer. Anyone who has ever had a burner account knows that rule # 1 is to never follow yourself. I doubt that this kid who was the photographer and frankly seems to have an intelligent and creative mind would be so naïve to follow himself. I think it was probably some other troll high school boy that thought he could gain some clout by commenting atrocious statements. I would assume that he followed the photographer as an act of alliance to New Gen and against Emma.
I personally have some concerns about Emma and how she has seemed to benefit from picking fights with a bunch of 17 and 18 year olds. Why did she feel the need to make a whole infographic dissing on the entire brand and hilariously include a picture of just herself LOL. What a joke. It also seems weird that she had no issues whatsoever when New Gen did a shoot with her partner depicting a party scene involving alcohol. How is she going to say that a shoot done by kids WITH other kids is glamorizing abuse but isn't going to comment on the fact that the shoot with her partner could be seen as glamorizing partying and alcohol to an audience of young teens?? Not to mention the fact that Nikki is far more influential in the running scene than these high school artists who are just trying to create original content.
As I was looking through Emma's instagram I saw on one of her pinned posts, a person who commented a genuine question about the relevance of Emma's sexuality to her standing as a runner (since she has seemed to build her entire brand upon being a gay athlete at BYU). The commenter seemed to be asking out of curiosity and instead of kindly informing/educating him, she responds with "Shut up Cody." I am seriously questioning why so many people are quick to take this woman's side when she is obviously always looking for any opportunity to stir the pot, make herself the victim, and then profit off of it. I would think that she has better things to do than get wrapped up in a creative photoshoot done by high schoolers. How bizarre!!
