Probably very low 4s. She and her coaches set goals based on training times. They would not ask for a race to be paced at 4:02 unless the training times showed that 4:00-4:01 was in reach.
I agree with that. It was an ambitious attempt. She just didn't have it tonight. I've bet horses long enough to know that layoffs are tricky. Sometimes everything goes great during training and the trainer expects a huge race first time back then nothing happens. But generally the foundation is indeed there. Results follow.
Typically i would not expect too much from Koko at season start. 2019 at her best outdoor season she did start with 2 800m/1500m combinations. 2:07/4:09 followed by 2:04/4:03 was no indication for her 8:20,07 3000m breakthrough race at Stanford.
For sharpener workouts these are actually quite good doubles. The first pair are in line w Tyynismaa's prs. The second pair match up w what Touhy's prs 'should be' about now.
Quite impressive that her workout was better than kt's actual bests, so it did indicate a 3k quicker than 8:35.
A lot of good stuff in that meet:
- Koko adds 2:06/4:06 to her 800/1500 workout doubles, still Touhy prs.
- Starliper 4:20 another 5 sec fitter
- Hartman 4:18pr to go w/her 4:39 indoor
- Tynnismaa now 4:12 / 15:30 for outdoor
- 5000q's for Chmiel, Tuohy, Shaw & Quarzo
On kt it was a good effort. They went after 4 min w/ that 2:09 800 start. Kt died, but you can't ever give 3:59 a shot, if you don't know what that speed feels like. 4:08 still #1 NCAA. Nice 5k comeback to get NCAA q off the table. A little crazy, but that 1500 hard/5000 tempo is actually an excellent 10k workout.
No one can ever say Henes doesn't individualize training, 15 distance ladies w/ 15 different race day schemes.
At this amazing rate of progress, she might break 15:20 by 2029. You lose again, son! Should have stayed at 'Bama, son! IT'S TYYNISMAATURTLESPEEDPROGRESS BABY!!!💪🤘
This proves that Henes is an awful coach. She’ll eventually get injured just like all of the NC State runners eventually do because Henes overworks them and doesn’t know what she’s doing.
If the plan is to peak for USA/WC in July/Aug, it's smart to take some time off after indoor and recoup. Being "only" at 4:08 in April may just be a reflection of that. We don't know the training dynamics Henes is implementing to consider the post-NCAA season so I wouldn't read too much into this race. She's not running the 1500m at USA's so what's a regular season 1500m? If anything is for certain, I'd like to think KT is taking a shot at the WC standard (14:57) at Sound which will require more focus.
You Tuohy fanboys want to make it out like she is the greatest collegiate distance runner of all time. Alexa Efrainsom, certainly no world beater, ran faster (4:07) in high school. Jenny Simpson ran faster (much faster - 3:59) in college. 4:08 is a slow time.

One race.
Meanwhile, on the records lists, Tuohy already owns three NCAA records (indoor 1500, indoor mile and indoor 3000). She will be getting more in Outdoor, such as the 5000m.
Say what you want but there’s no denying wear and tear taking a toll on the Wolfpack as they get older.
As they get older?what are you talking about, they are not even at their prime. Women in distance are at their prime around 27 years old. So they still are growing and getting more resilient, in this case ageing is a benefit not the other way around.

No it is not, Jenny Simpson was and is great, still 4:08 is not slow for college.

Interesting…Tuohy is like a Thoroughbred who needs tobe raced regularly to stay sharp.
