If you look at where the pace cart is when the video cuts to the wide shot then you get an understanding of what happened. She was following directly behind the cart, but it chose to drive around the extreme outside of the turn just after the hill. Far enough outside that even she eventually realized how much more distance this was going to add and moved back towards the pack and the inside of the turn. She's said herself that this is how she runs: "My coach tells me that, but I don't even know what the tangents are. I just follow the cart"
Because she is faster than everyone. How did you get this far without understanding so basic?
I was asking how she’s been so successful without knowing tangents. I was asking how an educated/ competitive runner has been at this level for so long without discovering a pretty basic concept that is important to running fast.
It is NOT important to running fast. She is probably already more successful at running than you could have dreamt of so there is that.
has anyone been able to determine (based on relative splits from other runners) if Valby died at the end, Touhy really picked up the pace, or some combination of both?
Valby was on 19:33 pace at the 2.83km mark. Thus her second half was roughly 2 seconds faster.

Does anyone know how symmetrical the course is? Is it reasonable to compare splits at 3K?

I think when she watches the footage from this race she will see it. Touhy really used the curves to her advantage. The drone footage shows how well she did this, and how it helped her gain that much faster. I image coaches everywhere will use this footage to teach that concept. Remember, Parker Valby is still learning too, just as Touhy did in races when she wasn't as experienced and ran on the outside with the pros. I bet Parker will be much better at this in the future.
Agreed. The Ariel footage will be great for this. i will say though, the best way to do this is to preview the course and talk about the tangents as you do to practice it. Not sure why that wasn’t done. Maybe just got caught up in the moment

Her coach let Valby down. He should have prepared her better.

This is why the Kenyans typically kick your azz. They ain’t going to stress themselves about the tangents for days after a race.
Valby did fine. Look up what happened tp Barringer the last time there was such a hyped matchup.
I will say that by running the same way every race, Valby allowed Tuohy and her coaches to get a good gauge on her. Tuohy knew she could outrun Valby going into the race. You could tell Tuohy knew this at the prerace press conference. She was as relaxed as could be for such a hyped race.

I already acknowledged her great resume. But you can’t say over the course of the race it didn’t cost her valuable seconds. Touhy made up a lot of ground just taking better turns. All the evidence is in the video. Ask any cyclist of any discipline. Any sprint triathlete. Any xc skier. It matters.
Did you watch the race? It isn't made up. She almost made wrong turns and ran very wide around several turns.
I sure did, more than once. And I saw the one big almost wrong turn towards beginning.
But outside if that, she did not do so bad with tangents and curves from what I saw. And again, Touhy was in the middle of the front pack till her own breakaway, not running perfect curves either. People are making such a big deal out of it, and Valby did fine. Can she improve sure. Is that why she didn't win? I don't think so.
The actual quote was “My coach keeps telling me this. I never run the tangents on any race. I don’t really know what the tangents are. I don’t know how to tell what they are. So I always just follow the cart and so I always end up running more than I should be. But it is what it is.”
Just telling her over and over to run the tangents isn’t coaching. If your athlete is saying they know it’s a problem and they don’t understand how to fix it then as a coach it’s your job to explain it to them so they do understand. The response shouldn’t be “it is what it is”. There’s a difference between coaching and telling.
Guys. Who care about what ifs? Lets discuss this rather than pretending line its an excuse for not winning or whatever.
There are three problems with this answer:
Why haven't the coach taken her jogging around a course to show her the concept? Like make her sprint where she naturally go, make her hug the bend and make her do the tangent. Talk her through every turn to show the reasoning.
How does she not have any idea where to run, at that level? She is more or less living off running the next years. How can she not understand the difference between hugging the rail or being out in lane 6, or going around a tight bend or run a straight line?
How does she have so little intellectual curiosity (and will to better herself) that she doesnt work hard to understand this? "It is what it is"? (I guess this point answers the previous one).
Its incredibly fascinating. One thing if she was 15, but she is 20?
Parker is an artist. Artists want to create and they don’t want to cut corners. You fans seem more interested in cutting corners. We artists are more interested in creation. Maybe realize we are all different.

People want to make excuses for her, but the reason we’re all talking about it is because it’s shocking to see at such an elite level.
I'm a huge fan of Valby. If healthy she will give Touhy all she can handle in the 5000m and run away from everyone in the 10000m. Such performances off 25-39 mpw and cross training. WOW
