TullyRunners ranked Cameron Rhone's Nike Portland 3rd place finish with a 188 speed rating, which is better than Parra's 4th place finish at Woodbridge at 187. Parra was also at Portland and finished 7 seconds behind Rhone with a rating of 186. Rhone's 188 is significantly higher than his best rating of last year of 173, so good for him to make the big jump to the upper tier of CA runners.
I wouldn't compare Rhone to Parra. Parra is a much more accomplished runner. He's also younger so he's clearly improving as he matures. But yes Rhone has improved.
As for his race at Portland, that was likely his bad race of the season. Great runners have bad races. Look at Claudillo and Aaron Salmanh's performances at Woodbridge. Not their best! You cant write them off. Those two have many credentials to just pretend that's all they can do. Same applies to Parra. Look at his Clovis race a year ago and his state meet results, he drop nearly 40 seconds on the same course. I think you're getting ahead. And from what I heard, their league meet was a disaster. Parra had over a 50 meter lead on the field after 2 miles and rolled his ankle which resulted in his 2nd place finish. It takes a very special bread to continue running with a sprained ankle!

I choose to concentrate on the positives. In this case, Rhone's performance, regardless of speed rating, showed a massive improvement over last year. Parra is mentioned because he is inarguably one the best runners in California, and it gives better context to Rhone's time.
Also, because I focus on the positives, I wasn't going to mention that I thought the speed ratings were a little high for both the boys and girls at Portland. Thomsen's Portland race was given a higher rating than Engelhardt's Woodbridge race. I don't agree with that, but I would rather just think of them as 2 great performances and they have great things ahead. Same with Rhone and Parra. Any mention of "rankings" now is just to get a sense of what is to come, but the results in the big races will be what matters.
about 6 different middle schools feed into Yosemite, all of those sophomore started running somewhat seriously in 8th grade, one a little earlier. One of the sophmore is in his first year of cross country.
Anyone remember when great oak had 7 guys above the 180 speed rating at state in 2019? That was nuts. I think there were 2 more juniors who didn’t race at state but had run a speed rating above 180 as well
Sadie Engelhardt, 16, has quickly become a top high school star after a spectacular youth career. Learn more about Engelhardt from some who know her best.
Girls d2- Newbury park 1, Los Altos 3….. Spaulding is back but I doubt she will be even scoring this year. I think Los Altos is #1 in d2 easy. Though Ventura is only getting better every year.
?????? Crescenta Valley at #2 for the boys D1 ?????? Their 3 mile PRs look similar to what the Newbury Park JV ran on Saturday. And their 5K times don’t look outstanding enough to be ranked this high (“this high” probably doesn’t even sound necessary to put here). And San Clemente beat Dana Hills by more (way more actually) than CV did.
Trabuco Hills and Clovis will do better at the Clovis invite than the polls say. Last meet Trabuco Hills actually had a senior run JV that would have scored for their varsity.
The person that did these rankings must be a Crescente Valley alum or has a family member that goes there. Jesuit, Whitney and Madera south robbed from these rankings. Crazy

Finally someone sees Los Altos women’s team as I do.
Now if Dyestat would fix their national ranking to match their California rankings.
Anyone know how San Clemente got so good? Last year was their first state berth in 32 years. Was it a new coach? New culture? New training philosophy? They are still pretty young this year. Only 3 seniors on varsity. Next year they return: 14:40 (11) 15:03 (11) 15:13 (11) 15:33 (9) 15:41 (11) Also a current soph who ran a 10:07 in the 3200 in track but has yet to run a XC race. So they will have decent depth next year, so they will be around.
With Great Oak and Newbury Park going downhill with new coaches, are we gonna need to expect San Clemente to reload year after year and compete for an NXN berth on a yearly basis?
New coach. Butler, the old HC during Dana’s glory days, moved out there.
Dana Hills has still done some good things under Dunn. They made NXN in 2019 with so many new varsity runners and got 8th there. One reason why they aren’t doing so well this year is because they are young and lost some seniors like Jai Dawson. They could come back to NXN next year and the following years. They only got 2 seniors, a freshman and a sophomore (he is their #1 also!) on varsity.
While in California covering a meet earlier this season, we caught up with the Dana Hills boys squad for one of their hill repeat workouts. Dana Hills has be...
I think a lot of the nonsense in all the various rankings should be worked out at Clovis. If someone isn’t there then that’s on them. Championship races are loaded.
How much does it suck to be #2 to NP? Has Granada ever won a state title? They've had a strong program for decades.
The sad thing is that Granada has even more seniors on varsity that Newbury park. And Ventura is good and only has juniors. At least Granada will likely go to NXN this year for the first time.
I noticed a similar situation. Madison West WI (a school that Olin Hacker went to) is #3 in Wisconsin right now and has one sophomore and the rest are juniors. But the problem is, Stevens Point (school that Chris solinsky went to) is #1 in the state and also has no seniors. So Madison west won’t be able to win the title this year or next year (and for a long while at least).
