I think a factor was that she was doubling off the 5000 so they may not have been sure what she had left. I figured this was her first Nationals, she ran a great 5000 and she would be fatigued. What was fun about the meet is that I don't think even Tuohy realized how ready she was. She was injured or ill almost all season and didn't race from December until the ACC championship. She also had that tough regional last year. Maybe in retrospect, realizing she was thisclose to winning, they would have done things slightly differently. But that 3000 was a terrific race.
I have a slightly different take. I think she has been focused on getting into better positions in races - meaning not running large chunks of races in lane 2. And she has done that. For this 3000 many praised her for her positioning right on the rail. But the downside to that is if the race is slow you can get stuck in the middle of the pack - as she did. There are 2 ways to run that race 1) the way Wayment did - get on the rail and stay near the front or 2) the way Roe did - stay back and out of trouble and make a big move. Unfortunately for Tuohy in this race there were only very occasional and short windows via which she could have gotten off the rail and when Roe moved, those around Tuohy basically did not.
I think the lesson is to defend your position better - early on Tuohy was in 2nd or 3rd right on the rail but she left some small spaces in front of her that others moved into and the next thing she knows she is in 10th or so. Gregory, who has more experience and had a better position in the race than Tuohy was among those who did not react quickly enough even though the Roe move happened right in front of the Arkansas coach. The BYU coach was on the other side and you can hear her screaming for Wayment to move in that mic'd up video.
Roe's tactics played out perfectly so good for her.

It was a good strategy. But that strategy is based on one key factor, that Roe did not run the 5000. You figured one of the contenders who was not doubling would try to gap the runners who raced the 5000, banking on having fresher legs. It was a winning strategy, but also obvious. Kudo still for pulling it off. Again in hindsight maybe KT just runs the 3000, but I liked the way it worked out. The amusing thing is she had to beg her coach to run the 5000 and qualified for the 5000 at the last possible moment by the skin of her teeth. Possibly cost her a title but I think that 5000 race was extremely valuable over the long haul.

quite a race to remember, tuohy might have lost the title but i did not even view both races as a loss....... experience, lessons, realizations, confidence, trust, belief, strength, lots of things that just made her an even better runner
hats off to roe indeed, and her coach, also to coach henes for guiding tuohy and for tuohy for working her a** off to get to this level again

I agree on this - they probably figured being way in back would be ok as most of the better runners in the 3000 were coming off the 5000 or the mile and would be unlikely to drive the pace fast. And her being fresh mean she could make the big move. Which is also why she was my pick to win the 3000.

Well there is a block option, but only for registered posters. And this person apparently likes to hide who they so they can't be blocked. But, maybe that is a suggestion to make to the staff - capability to block anyone. Since you can't use non-registered 2 names in one thread (I think) maybe that would help.

as the posters have said and agreed on here.. i guess tuohy is capable of running 15:15 on all right conditions and when in a fast field but sadly she will never be in a fast field (fast race) until nationals
she will be in a fast field in regionals but it wont be a fast race..

I also read somewhere (I think) that Nichols last 400 was 2nd fastest in the field to only Schweitzer, something like 65 or 66. I know she was falling a little back of Chelangat. Unfortunately neither appeared on on camera much on last 2 laps. If I am Chelangat I go for the 10,000.
Nichols had the second fastest close, 1:05.85 or so. By comparison the top finishers in the ncaa finals tend to close in the 1:04 range. I didn't see the race so I have no idea how much Chelengat was trying to hold her place the final lap, but I think Nichols made up 3 seconds. When Henes ran 15:18 last year she basically ran straight 1:13 400s then in the NCAA finals closed in 1:04, so cannot really predict. I expect Chelengat to run the 10000m then see what she has left for the 5000. Colorado seems to have found a niche with red shirt seniors from Big 10 schools. Altitude does not hurt.
so, katelyn tuohy is now a sophomore because outdoor track was not part of the sports that got an "additional year"?? right?? only fall and winter sports (xc and indoor track) did not count in their playing years, while the outdoor season last year, counted.
