Kevin and Gordon debate how fast we'll see Katelyn Tuohy run in the women's 1500mm race at the 202 Raleigh Relays.Become a member for exclusive perks: https:...
Actually her coach was really good and told her every practice to slow down... He would set realistic pacing and tell her not to run faster than that...
But what can he do for races he can not get out there and block her from running fast
It's just what athletes want to do they want to see how fast they can run...
I think a lot of the chasing records was crazy as a lot of those runners ended up injured or almost all of them
I agree that he was a good coach, but don't agree that a coach can't get his runners to run smarter over the course of four years. We all have runners who pace themselves badly. I get mine to improve their pacing by convincing them that they'll run faster. Other coaches have different methods. But I'd say it's the exception to see great runners pacing as consistently badly as Tuohy did in high school.
Tuohy's won/loss record over 4 years of high school was 364-5, so her strategy of get out front early and hang on worked pretty well.
In the 15:37 indoor 5k, she showed remarkable pacing banging out lap after lap of 75s alone with no rabbit lapping the entire field until she dropped off the last 800 to settle for 15:37 vs goal of 15:30.
Which races were you referring to, where she consistently paced badly?

"Consistently" is an overstatement. In most of her races there was no real competition to race against.
First on her record, I can't speak to 364 wins, but the 5 losses seem to have been in a 600 as a sophomore, a 1500 (to Jessica Lawson) and a 3000 (to Kate Murphy) as a freshman, and the Millrose 1500/mile as a sophomore. The Millrose race clearly seems to have been an aberration.
I think after getting outkicked by (senior) Sammy Watson to lose a 1500 as an 8th grader, and then by (senior) Jessica Lawson to lose a 1500 as a 9th grader she decided she was going to take control and set fast paces. But only my guess. But she did run away from Lawson in Outdoors as a 9th grader, and then we all saw what she did in XC in the Fall.
The worst pacing I saw was in her Jr year DMR when she was trailing, and split something like 63/70/74/74 to win but she was on fumes at the finish. I think she said after the finish "You would think I would know how to run this by now". Other races which may appear to have been poorly paced were her 9:05 3000 and 9:47.88 3200 as a sophomore - but I actually think her pacing was right for the time they thought she could run - but she just didn't have it that day to run 9:00 and sub 9:40 (although I bet her training indicates showed she could).
Well, Quarzo is stepping up as a reliable, consistently improving runner with another solid performance.
indeed she has been progressing too.. but they need a senior to step up, im waiting for savannah shaw's breakthrough .. if she can produce good times, wolfpack will win that xc title again
chmiel
tuohy
bush
shaw
starliper
hays/holt (if they still have eligibility)
+ someone they have been hiding
Hays ran three years of XC for Columbia before Covid - there's no path to her having another year.
She almost certainly has two years of outdoor (counting this one) because of the Ivy League cancelling last year when everyone else was racing.
She positively split every race, or almost every race, in her final two years of high school. She's a totally different, better runner now. And she was phenomenal then!
I think she raced like that in high school because she was so much more talented than her competitors from the second half of her freshman year onward. And also because she was just a high school kid who just really liked going out fast. She tended to running on her own without any pacing help, and even where they had a game plan, such as the 3200 at the Loukes games in 2017, where her training was probably indicating 9:40 or below, it was not easy to execute when running completely on her own.
Now she gets to go back to when she was racing in 7th-9th grades. Then she was involved in a number of highly contested races, especially at the state championships and at New Balance. And if we go back to those races, she always had a strong kick. Her competitors such as Lawson talked about it. We saw it again at the 2019 NXN race; she could dig deep. Now that she is older, wiser and back at full racing strength we are really seeing it, but it was always there.
She also beat Kate grace in the trails who went on to win a few diamond leauges. I think after the summer grace had Wed be hard pressed to to not call grace a world class. So she lost to my gold medal at the Olympics , Rodgers bronze medals at the Olympics , Wilson whose been world class for ever at this point and just got a gold medal , and then behind here is Kate grace , i think logic dictates Meyer is not only world class but probably contending to make a world championship / final or Olympic final if she makes a team.

now that you said that, you are true and i remember those races and interviews, its just that i was brainwashed by the people here in lestrun that tuohy has no kick speed yet i clearly know how sammy watson and tuohy's older competitors when she was 7-9th grade was talking about her kick, young tuohy's kick shocked them all and they kept saying its an honor to be racing with her, but as she gets older and faster she was just faster than everybody else and we never saw that kick again until that nxn 2019 race
this just makes it more exciting and so good for katelyn's progress, last year she didnt have a full build up and was less fitter, now shes fit, leaner, stronger, doing harder workouts, hence shes better, stronger, faster and hanging up with the ncaa champs' level at comps
I heard sometimes pros just join races for contract obligations... But still good 4 tuohy to beat some pros...
I guess, but 4:12 isn’t exactly a pro time.
are you dissing michaela meyer ? or did you not understand the phrase you just replied to?
this thread nor the phrase you replied to isnt saying tuohy should go pro after running 4:12, its got nothing about tuohy runnign a pro time, the phrase is simply talking about tuohy beating pros and getting a good start in her outdoor szn, and continuing to improve every single race..

the race was a sit and kick, tuohy simpy outkicked everyone on the last lap
meyer is the facility's record holder, the acc 1500m and 800m champ, ncaa 800m champ and segrave is last year's winner ... and tuohy out-kicked them both
None. 4:12 is a nice NCAA time but 60 Americans ran faster last year. This isn't high school anymore.
and so?? this is college running, who cares about how many americans or worldwide runners ran that time.. are they in the ncaa?? are they student athletes??? we only care about d1 athletes here, it literally says d1 college running discussion
its a season opener, 4:12 is good ncaa time, and only few runners run 4:12 and below in last years outdoor szn
so take a chill pill, and go to other threads about worldwide 1500m threads if you wanna talk about the times of non-college runners
who compares a time from raleigh relays to a freaking world 1500m list
laughing so hard, yall really try hard to erase the fact that katelyn tuohy just beat and out-kicked pro runners and multi acc champ and ncaa champ in a season opener
also, amazing how katelyn can run 4:12 without using spikes... i believe she was using her adizero shoes made for 5000m
She was wearing the adidas version of the Nike super spike. All the NC State women were wearing them. They were the same spike she wore in the indoor 3K and 5k.
