If you're only following rules for fear of punishment while simultaneously thinking think they are idiotic (and they are indeed idiotic in this case), should those rules exist? And if everyone in your workplace agrees they are idiotic and breaks those rules, but only one person gets caught and punished, would you not advocate on their behalf or at the very least try and get them some sort of leniency? I'm not advocating for actively skirting the system or breaking rules, I'm simply saying that if you are upholding a rule for the sake of upholding a rule, what is the point of it? I'm certain where the majority of the public will land on this issue, and your are in the minority, but we'll see what the authoritative bodies will do with this.

Heard this was discussed in her camp before the 2 and was why she pulled out of 2, hoping to end 30 day ban asap.

One key reason to ban weed in competition that no one is mentioning is its calming effects and its ability to allow one to sleep well. The night before a big meet is one every athlete has varying levels of nerves and if there is a means to get an edge then weed is one. I don’t personally support it being banned but just saying this is one legit reason to have it on banned list besides the primary reason its on there, promoting sport over recreational drugs. Old school views but it is a major driver of the reason behind it being banned.

The problem, of course, is that for every one of those potential positive side effects, you could undoubtedly find a perfectly legal WADA substance which has similar effects. Many anti-depressants are legal substances for WADA and accomplish the same. Which takes us back to it being "old school" views, which in this case means "views held by living fossils who saw scare documentaries like Reefer Madness in schools."

Weed is banned because it is/was illegal. It’s a dumb thing to ban. Richardson is a grade A moron for smoking, eating etc. given the nature of her status and the fact it is an Olympic year. She literally may have cost herself millions of dollars here. Even if reinstated she probably has cost herself mid 6 figures in endorsements.

1. Rules are rules. We can't have a society where you break rules because you personally don't agree with the rules.

2. If you want to change the rules, then do it when its not clearly benefitting you. The amount of people here suddenly want to change everything about wada just because your star is caught is incredible.

3. In most countries cannabis is illegal. Its pretty unfair that some athletes would be able to use cannabis to wind down after practice, elleviate pain, calm nerves etc, while others can't. There are also some sports (target shooting etc) in the olympics where cannabis is indeed performance enhancing. While its not directly performance enhancing, it is indirectly.

Weed is gonna be illegal as long as people who make and decide laws gonna get paid less by the weed lobby than the alcohol and tobacco lobby.

Also Sha'Carri is mentally unstable. You can't be in your right mind to now what's on the line and still do it.

I guess I assumed USATF rules/procedures etc. were set in stone, at least until the next rules conference (or however they promulgate them), but your argument makes a lot of sense, and certainly isn't unreasonable.

Although I obviously wish she hadn't gotten herself into this mess to begin with, she's also very young, and losing the opportunity to compete at the Olympics seems like an incredibly draconian punishment for her mistake.

Reminds me a bit of J'Den Cox missing weight at his Olympic Trials a few weeks ago (Men's Freestyle Wrestling). Although he was moving up two weight classes, and wouldn't have had much, if any, difficulty, making 97 kg, his coach apparently told him the wrong weigh-in time, and one of our strongest medal hopes will be watching the Olympics on TV.

That said, a USA Wrestling committee was convened that morning to vote on whether he should at least be able to provisionally compete, but they voted no.

She used/took/smoked an illegal substance, now she has to deal with the consequences. She has noone else to blame and people starting petitions are stupid for defending her in the way the do.

Lol it’s not legal in the United States of America’s eyes. The country she represents lol.

Zero comparison to Cox. He was told the wrong time for way ins by a usa wrestling employing who admitted he told him the wrong time. He then made weight but 10 mins or so late.

What's "truly asinine" is slavishly defending toadying to authority to the point of meekly complying with all rules however stupid. One should generally follow rules because most of those made by functional institutions are in the common interests, and it's egotistical and self-centered to suppose that one knows better than everyone else like some anti-vaxxer, but the US athletics authorities are not funcional institutions and US drug laws/rules have been messed up for decades, and, moreover, everyone knows this. If she were snorting coke just before a race, that would be banworthy. Smoking weed might help with recovery for all I know, but it seems very unlikely it enhances athletic performance.

Yes, she's an idiot, because she should know the rules and their consequences and it's absurdly stupid to risk gold medals for a toke, but that's no defense of stupid rules nor following them.
