This Ron Vera even emailed the White house repeatedly trying to convince Trump to adopt these tariff ideas. Well. Ron Vera doesn't exist. It is a made up person. Navarro cites a fictional person as his economic authority. In fact Ron Vera is just an anagram of Navarro's own name. A switcharoo on the lettering. Basically none of this is true. Unemployment for life science PhDs is like 1-2%. And these low-paying postdoc jobs still typically pay 60-70k/year with full benefits, 401k/403b match, etc. Some postdoc salaries at national labs are north of 100k. They’re still underpaid, but it’s definitely a real job. These positions are a required step on an academic career path, and of course the government absolutely counts them as full-time employment.
