Hmm, I don't seem to remember Trump campaigning on increasing unemployment, cratering the stock market, putting us at the precipice of a recession, raising inflation, etc., etc.
What I do remember him saying is that he would start a bull run in the stock market, reduce inflation, lower gas prices, end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours, dismantle our constitution and judiciary, prevent America from getting ripped off by foreign countries, and a myriad of other promises. To his credit he did say that he would impose tariffs...so 1 out of 100 aint bad?
Wonder if he would have gotten elected if he opted for full disclosure? Oh never mind. The only upside is that many of my conservative colleagues won't admit to voting for him anymore.
Tariffs are horrible except when every country in the world uses them on us.
Trump has been sounding the alarm on trade deficits for decades. He's betting it all on something he promised despite the risks and SHORT TERM pain.
And now this:

maybe this will help a little, from a guy who is, unlike you, an actual conservative:
Post See new posts Conversation Erick Erickson @EWErickson If you want to encapsulate Donald Trump’s economic vision, a 10% baseline tariff puts the United States in the territory of an African third-world nation. Every single developed nation on planet earth has a baseline tariff of less than 10%, and most of those nations, contrary to what you might believe, exempt the United States from paying tariffs due to trade agreements Trump just scuttled.

For those asking: yes, voting for Trump was a mistake.
I thought we'd get a repeat of the first administration, but we didn't. The signs were there, I just did not take my own ideas about the awfulness of Trump and MAGA seriously enough. pic.twitter.com/lMhEpHAD8S
I’d just like to point out that Democrats have historically been all for protectionism until Trump did it.
in retrospect, the West should have been more protectionist during the China shock. I think most people agree those 10ish years were punishing for the West and we should have used tariffs to slow the offshoring of jobs to China. but those years are over.
most people also think the chip business cannot be so heavily on Taiwan, which could be attacked any day by China. So sure, use tariffs to help build a US chip business. That;s going on now, although of course trump killed the chips bill because Biden got it done, not him.
Those kinds of narrow tariffs/protectionism can work.
but this crazy flamethrower method is a gigantic own goal. We want Vietnam to make t shirts. We don't want our people making items worth $1.50. It's a disaster and the markets said it cost the globe $300 trillion.

“The average tariff on Chinese products coming into the U.S. is 2% whereas the average tariff on U.S. goods going into China is 35%. Is that reciprocal?
The above items cause companies to put off expansion and product development. They will also hold on hiring or layoff workers.
Manufacturers not already planning new factories in the US will take year(s) to get up and running.
Could we get someone to clearly explain how the tariffs will ultimately be good for the American people? Specifics please, including a timeline. Thus far this has not been provided by either the Trump Admin or conservative news sources touting tariffs.

the best we can hope for is that trump is negotiating and will fold, having accomplished some thing he can point to. or if leaders flatter him in just the right sycophantic way.
otherwise none of this makes sense. no comapny will spend billions to build a factory when the next president will just wipe out the tariff.
