How bad is Ukraine's propping up its Nazi past in 2023?
A comparison of nationalist pasts, WWII selective memory, and revisionist history:
Level 1 / Germany: Full admission of WWII atrocities. They teach EVERYTHING to their students in their history curriculum. Little is hidden.
Full ownership.
Level 2 / Japan: mixed school curriculum with a largely revised history of Japanese atrocities noted in books as “incidents” where hostilities towards Japan (the occupier) were the ‘provocation’ leading to hugely disproportionate responses via the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of Chinese, Filipinos, and other nationals in Japan occupied territory. But plays an effective victim card via atomic bomb convenience and is able to escape most its past with this victim card. Most Japanese are against right wing nationalists today and understand Japan was the aggressor.
Partial ownership.
Level 3 / Ukraine: Sprints full speed to Nazi values, props up mass murdering Ukraine nazi collaborating groups = OUN/UPA. Most Ukrainians in the west are in favor of Nazi past and neo-nazi values (Banderites) now under the guise of ‘patriotism’.
No ownership.
It's getting worse, going in the wrong direction.
