Just posted this on another thread and thought it would be helpful here to sum up the threat of the Republican Party to the republic.
Virtually every expert on 'end of democracy' and 'rise of authoritarianism' is waving red flags day and night about what Trump is doing to our country.
Trump and the Republicans are checking off virtually every box on how to destroy a healthy democracy. Fight the courts, weaken the national legislature, violently attack the national legislature, fight the lawyers, fight the universities, give pardons to your criminally violent political allies, threaten the opposition party with prosecutions, make people think elections are fraudulent, make people scapegoat some group/s, start talking about war, reward the friends of the president and punish his enemies, gut law enforcement...Trump is doing every one of these, one by one.
Will that affect the majority of lives? The interesting thing is...no, it won't. Even in authoritarian nations, hardly anyone is bothered by lack of freedoms. A nation arrests a thousand protesters and that scares the rest of the nation into staying in line. And the nation goes along, without a real democracy and with a lot fewer freedoms. But most people don't need a lot of freedom - they are just trying to live their lives quietly.
But eventually the nation crashes because freedom is required for a nation to stay wealthy like the US. Capital will leak out steadily for more free places. And then we'll all feel it as wages stagnate and jobs become hard to get.

futures for the US market are predicting yet more declines for US stocks monday.
these tariffs are wild...costing us trillions already. And we all know protectionism fails in the end so it's all just shooting ourselves in the foot. Or maybe the head.
