Just another Wednesday in America. I go for a run on a beautiful day in the Colorado foothills and what do I hear the whole time? Sirens. I get home and tell my wife something is going on in town. I had my suspicions and she confirms them, there was a shooting at Evergreen High School. Three kids shot, all in critical condition. God damn it. How many school shootings has this state had now? It's every year at this point.
I go online to look for more details. And all the headlines are all about a different shooting. The victim's last words were, basically, "we don't have a gun problem, we have a black people problem." Well, it would seem he was proven wrong. What an awful video.
Of course, it is immediately assumed, based on zero evidence, that the shooter was a Democrat. And the conservative world is now basically demanding that the military be deployed against every Democratic voter in America. But we don't know anything about the guy who shot him yet. Maybe he was Democrat. But, as we have seen time and time and time and time again, people who are driven to commit these shootings are usually mentally ill and have bizarre, nonsensical political views.
For decades, this country's response to gun violence has been to do... absolutely nothing. Our appetite for it is bottomless. And things just keep getting worse. Go figure.
As I said two days ago. Have we all learned a lesson about jumping to conclusions about the motives/political affiliation of a killer following a shooting? No, of course not.
This followed a very similar same trajectory as the Trump assassination attempt. "He's a liberal, he's a liberal, he's a liberal! Oh, wait, his political views are actually nonsensical and he really just wanted to be at the center of a gruesome, public scene? Ah, well!"
People are so desperate to put this weirdo in a convenient little box so they can score their precious internet points. But the reality is that it's yet another case of a troubled, terminally-online young man with easy access to firearms. Just like the Evergreen HS shooter turned out to be.
Carry on with your civil war or whatever. I'd recommend you all log off, go outside, and take a few deep breaths instead.
