Men, in particular white men, dominate the internet and get an unleavened diet of right-wing politics. They're unwilling to consider the problems they face today meeting the demands of the economy, are the same problems women and minorities have been facing for decades. From their perspective, equality looks like a downgrade. Critiquing the financial system is like criticizing the construction of the house they designed and built. Even if men are also now living in its ruins, it still feels personal.
And then a guy comes along and tells them the reason they're unhappy and unfulfilled in life is because of blue-haired feminists who are criticizing THEIR house and want to tear it down and build a new one, and not the fact the original house was built badly.

Trump has no equivalent in a Western democracy; he would be invisible anywhere else; he is the voice of an increasingly dysfunctional American culture.
