Not really. The shot plants itself fairly firmly in the turf, leaving an obvious point from which to measure -- there's not a lot of human judgment involved. We're talking centimeters here, not millimeters.

Yes, I think that's a valid way of looking at it.

But to me it adds to how amazing the competition was. A three-way "photo finish" in an event where that never ever happens.

And as any measurement errors will be randomly distributed the official ranking is still the one most likely to reflect the "true" result.

Lol at the people equating GDS with Hassan. Other than her being fast and improving a lot (similar to Houlihan last year), what about her is suspicious? Her coach? Her doctors? Her physios? Old coaches? Training partners? Any association with doping whatsoever?

Literally the only reason to think she's doping is cause she ran so fast. Also FYI, this is probably her first near injury free season since she made the Olympics at 20. She had pretty bad achilles/calf issues in collegiate but still ran 4:03 at 21 (beating Houlihan that year).

Having a first healthy year in 3 years, going full time pro, getting a training partner who has a 3:55PB as opposed to 4:10-4:15s, first ever trips to altitutde. That seems like a perfect recipe for drastic success.

But sure, thats the same as a 3:56 runner joining a coach who then gets a 4 year ban and has all manner of rumours and sketchy associations, and then the following year crushes everyone in the 10,000, then everyone in the 1500 to solo run a 3:51.

You're saying the officials cannot reliably distinguish between a 22.90 and a 22.91 throw, that there is significant human error involved such that third place here may be the actual winner. This is simply not true.

By agreement, the throwing events are not measured to millimeters, as the current set up could not reliably do that. They should probably introduce some sort of high speed photographic system. In the shot anyway.

I certainly wasn't surprised to see Gabriella run 3:56 after how fresh she looked running 4:00 in the semis. No opinion on her overall improvement other than...wow.

Where can I watch the WC marathon? BBC links moved on to regular programming it appears.

They have this in tennis (with challenges), should just use the same precise video system to measure distance in throws. They can just keep going like they do now, but this system in place would come in handy when there is a close call like today.

There is a much higher chance for Houlihan to be on something (due to the connection between BTC and Nike HQ, similar to NOP) than GDS. GDS merely reached the level of her new training partner, Laura Muir. Hassan ventured into territory no female has ever been before, with the exception of Dibaba, Masterkova and Chinese Qu Yunxia who are all extremely suspicious. She also did it with a dominance (jogging first 200m, looking back 10x on the last 200m) that is extremely rare in events like the 1500m. Not like Cheruiyot is gonna jog to a win like that.

I'm not complaining about it. I'm not saying that the official results should be changed or that they should hand out three gold medals. And I've explicitly said that the official result is also the one most likely to be the "true" result.

But we're talking about judging that two holes left in a lawn left by a cannonball being through 23 meters are within one centimeter of each other. That it comes down to this is amazing!

You seem unaware of how big a centimeter is. It is not difficult to distinguish between a 22.90 throw and one that is 22.91. Were we talking millimeters, I might agree with you.

But there is technology that could make that distinction as well. It would put a bunch of fat old guys out of work, however.

Allyson Felix ran 49.18 on her 400m leg in the 4 x 400m. That's insane considering she has only been back for a short amount of time.

Can she get back to 48 seconds for tokyo next year?
