No, there is no film evidence of Coe doing a lap of honour after his 1:41 WR. There is only film of him clearly winded, hands on hips, head down and walking while waiting for the official time to be announced. He did a lap of honour, after a short rest, after his 1:42 WR!

EL G ran a 1:46 high with a rolling start at the end of his Olympic 1500 win. Coevett is right in stating that his 800m pb was only 1:47. Of course he was capable of faster, but his complete avoidance of running 800m competitively, or even 1000m, as a sharpener, was historically very unusual for the world’s leading miler! Likewise, Lagat, a 3:26 1500 guy and peer of El G’s, never broke 1:46 in an 800 race, despite having run in some fast paced races on the circuit. Again, most unusual based on what came before in the sport. It seemed that the archetypal miler went from someone who combined an elite ability at 800m, to someone whose endurance suddenly went through the roof around the mid 90’s. Nothing more highlights this than the change in championship timetables from previously geared towards allowing athletes to double in the 8 &15, to then being focused on allowing athletes to double up over 1500 and 5000m. A trend that seems to have swung back in recent years.

It was 1:46, not 1:47. Not having a flying start hurts, but that effect is obviously swallowed up by not having to run 700m. Add in the Olympic rounds and 1:44 shape is still my conclusion. And a 1:44 guy winning the Olympic 1500/5k double surely could’ve gone 1:42 with specific training.

Never ran near 1.44, which is in another realm to 1.46-7. But if you think a runner without great base speed could "train" to get down from an imaginary 1.44 to even 1.42, why stop there? Lop another couple of seconds off. 1.40. You have no idea.

The air we breathe is 21% oxygen. Humans exhale 16% oxygen. The human body’s carrying capacity for oxygen is LESS than what your body inhales. Your blood can’t transfer as much oxygen as you breathe in.

Training for running is training to raise the blood’s carrying capacity, not your lungs’ ability to inhale.

Actually EL G's last 800m in Athens was 1:46.7, so while not a 1:47, it was 1:46 high.

I don't believe EL G could have run 1:42, but the 'specific training' part of your argument is beside the point.

Most other 1500m greats ran much faster than EL G over 800m while training for their primary event, the 1500m.

Even the likes of Scott and Walker, could manage around the 1:45 flat mark, yet Lagat never broke 1:46 despite running in several fast, paced races.

And as for Amos, his form has been very inconsistent since that run in London 2012.

And he should at least be under some sort of cloud of suspicion with those newspaper reports.

Yeah...right, in a nutshell it increases O2 via hemoglobin to the working muscles. I think you're just horsing around and know this. If, OTOH, you're actually clueless, then why don't read this article on basics of rEPO and endurance athletes i.e. EPO 101.

Guerrouj didn't start running 5000m until 2003, the year before he retired. Up to that point he was basically a specialist 1500m runner. So for almost a decade, there was no 5k work being done that would affect the maintenance of his 800 speed!

I think El G could have run a 1:44 800m in his 1500 peak form, but no way was he capable of 1:42. If he had been then I'm sure he'd have had a go at the 1000m WR, which was, after all, held by someone with a 1:44.5 pb.

El G simply did not have a high basic speed. Neither did Lagat or Bekele.They had phenomenal speed endurance - but not speed. If El G had the speed you think he did he would have been a competitive 800 runner. But he didn't race seriously over the shorter distance because he simply lacked that kind of pace. Cram was way faster than El G over 800 and he could barely crack 23 for 200. But why stop at musing that El G could have been a top-end 800 runner? You might just as well claim he could have run sub-44 for 400 - with the "right training". He was a 1500-5k runner for good reason. Endurance, not speed, was his strength. It isn't hard to guess where that kind of off-the-charts endurance came from in the '90's.
