I've another brief article where Grant states *all* his ankle procedures were easier to overcome than AP (taking in account expectation of turnaround time for rehab to return to play: way too short)

Also - had a bud go see the German doc. He reads this thread and I'd like him to weigh in for himself. But cost was not astronomical (hey, you see Munich) and woman really knew her stuff. I hope for him, a vetern of this complaint (had Meyers & mesh before), that it works out.

I went to Canada a few years back to have the adductors released. I had read Wiley's paper on the grasilas syndome.

I found him and have spoken to him several times these past years. He is retired but his colleague in London Ontario felt that it was the longus and not the gracilas muscle causing these problems. So I agreed to have my longus released. Problem is he only lengthened it with a z cut and that only helped a tiny bit. I only found this out after I woke up after the surgery. Moreover he just didn't know what to look for like meyers. When I asked him how it looked he said it's not like a matchbox, whatever that means.I will not have any more surgeries unless I am sure the doctor knows what he's looking at.

I have been travelling all over the world to minic what meyers does. I guess I should have gone to med school in 94.

I am about 50 pecent better, but it still is weak deep in there and the adductors are too tight. I have been working on my tight back and that helps a bit, but that won't fix me alone. Problem was that by the time I saw meyers in 97 I was a mess, and he didn't want to work on guys who only ran 32 minute 10ks back then. He has certainly changed, he was much nicer this time around calling me doctor, which I hate. I still need someone to look for damage to my abdominal wall and release my adductors from my pubic bone.

This mess by cattey sound horrible like the plate meyers wanted to put in me in 97, by sawing off a healthy pubic joint. I am so glad I didn't agree to that, maybe that is why he was ride to me back then.

soccerdad. Best of luck to your boy. he's certainly too young to be going through any of this. It is an awful and debilitating injury, that's for sure.

BasketBallguy: you live in Iowa, i can tell you is that Dr Cattery is in Milwaukee (I believe). I suppose that would be your closest bet. I know next to nothing about him other than what this message board has provided - but this has been a great source of info. From this, I've gathered that he is one of the more well-known names in the AP surgical repair business, at least in this country.

I went to Meyers. His procedure is a bit different than Cattey's. In my opinion, i would not wait around to find out if it heals. I did that, and wound up waiting 6 months to find out it never would have healed on its own. I wasted my time, i missed hockey and softball for 6 months, not to mention the $1500+ i dropped on PT and clueless doctor's appointments. If you're seriuosly considering making the journey, you may as well make it now and find out if he thinks it requires surgery or not. Meyers has seen about 7000 people and operated on roughly half of them, so I wouldn't think Cattey would want to just cut you open for the sake of it. I would hope and trust he'd be forthcoming. Meyers told me mine would never have healed. Cattey has a good rep from what i understand. Regardless, it's your decision. You dont' want the surgery, you can obviousy elect not to have it.

the Waves2ya guy knows a lot about this injury and has provided a ton of excellent info (Thanks Waves!). I don't know where I am or will be in my recovery, but i can tell you that i notice a slight difference in somethings NOT hurting as much as they did before the operation.

I don't think this is something that goes away. Read all you want, you'll find out, it's very difficult to overcome with conservative treatment.

AP lingers (intervention or not). The surgery is not an optimization (ROC: you ran a marathon in less than 3 hrs and still think you are candidate for William's revision? If he cut you, I'd be worried about the good doc). Meyers (suture), Cattey (mesh). Presentation is elusive (symptomology similar to hip tears, lower lumbar/discogenic pathology and definitive diagnosis is best left to a pro (regardless of revision technique, a good reason to see one of the two or three top doc's out there). Malady can lead to compartmental deterioration and concomitant complaint that's not necessarily resolved by one procedure vs. another. Finally - there's a lot to read in these 9 or so pages; if you are really desperate (can't get out of car/up steps, sleep at night - let alone run), you owe it to yourself to read everything.

Grant's not the only one. This kind of nefarious debility leads the buff to call the stricken 'slackers' and is the kind of perplexing injury that, at one time, would have sports med's say things like "he's lost his legs".

BBallguy - look for the U of N protocol buried in these threads; that and reformer oriented Pilate's leading to squat routine & slideboard tools back to running/cutting at tolerance are about the best hope for non-surgical recovery (if you even have AP) I've found. Check out PT Gray Cook's work...

I've recent article where Meyer's says the Cinci Bengal's have the best protocol he's seen but I've yet to find it...

I had my surgery for a bilateral sports hernia done in Minneapolis on Dec. 30th. Dr. David Joesting was the surgeon. His name has been brought up on other related threads about this topic. He is an excellent Dr. and has done hundreds, if not over 1000 of these surgeries. He does the open procedure as well. But I am not sure if it is exactly like Meyers in PA. He knows who both Meyers and Cattey are though.

I am only 15 days post-op, so am only walking/jogging now. Hope to be running in 2-3 weeks. Still have swelling and slight pain yet.

Joesting is worth checking out for midwesterners with this problem.

Wow. Running after 15 days. Meyers' patients have to wait at least 4 weeks before even starting PT. Did you have adductor releases? That is a very fast recovery. Wonder what the difference is between surgeons.

I am not running, I am walking more than jogging. The longest stretch I ran was maybe 75 meters, and that was very slow. I have only been "jogging" to test the level of pain. I did not have the adductor release. I don't plan to try to "run" for at least 2 more weeks. Joesting told me to start walking as soon as I felt like it, then when I felt I could start jogging, go ahead and try to. I am not pushing it though. Meyers' recovery program is longer than Joesting's I am sure. Meyers does the adductor release I know. I don't know that Joesting does that.

since the topic is back up to the front page, can anyone address the question as to whether there are strengthening or stretching exercises that you can do to prevent the problem?

i've never seen a "prevention of hernias" discussion here and it would sure be easier to figure out how to prevent it vesus have to deal with trying to fix the problem.

Don't laugh, but I would think any activity which will keep your abdominal muscles strong would help. I've heard even Yoga or Pilates can really help strengthen the "core" of your body (i.e. the lower abdomen, high pelvic area). Or maybe even certain exercise with a stability ball.

I am from the uk and spent last year training for a very hilly marathon. In nDecember, just after the marathon I played soccer with friends and hurt my groin ( never had groin pain before). Presumed this has something to do with not playing soccer for 12 months and the pain was due to the twisting and turning involved. 7 days later I experienced severere lower ab pain which (although not as severe) still persist as do the groin pain. Do you think this is Gilmores groin and and can any of you offer advice, I have been worrying myself silly that it is something more serius.

I incurred a similar type injury last October (05'). After playing soccer I returned home with a sore groin (and lower abs) and could barely walk the following week. I played through it on the weekends only mustering enough strength to run at 3/4 speed and passing lightly (no ability to shoot at all without pain).

I ended up taking about three to four weeks off and resumed play in a tournament. Things seemed normal until about after an hour of play. Fortunately this was the last game of the season and I was able to rest it two months without playing.

I recently just started up playing again and the first time out it hurt, but the second time round (two weeks later) I noticed more strength in the area. I was a bit sore the next day, but it seems to be improving. I am going to slowly reduce the times between playing.

In some cases like mine, I believe taking time off helps. I'm just a weekend soccer player so this isn't as difficult for me as many of you runners though.

I have had this problem for almost 10 years now. I, like most of you, have been told that this pain was "in my head". I have read some negative feedback on letting this problem go on for too long. I have also read that the surgeries still can be performed if this problem has gone on for a long time.

If you had surgery after a period with as long as this, what were the results? Who did you go to?

Also, are there other doctors than Cattey (in Wisconsin) and Meyers (in Philly)?

I feel somewhat desperate to find answers, so any response is a welcome one. I would be willing to attempt the surgery even if the chance of success would not be high, because my gut feeling tells me that this sports hernia is the correct diagnosis.

Remeber, meyers and his people are first and foremost running a for profit business, and your well being is probably not a concern.

Look at all the other running sites, waves2ya is on ALL of them.

this quote idiotic...dr. meyers is about as low-key as it gets, and he's already as busy as he needs to be...he works in a major hospital, not some fly-by-night clinic. the idea that he has moles on an internet messageboard drumming up business for him is laughable.i know when i saw him, my well-being WAS his main concern. i was very well taken care of, given plenty of TIME in my consultation, and treated respectfully from beginning to end. we've all had the experience of seeing doctors who look down at you and don't really listen to what you say and rush you out the door, etc. my experience with meyers was the opposite of that.i am telling you, as someone who has had this problem completely and unequivocally SOLVED by the guy, you have nothing to worry about. if you have access to the philly area, go see him. i don't know what some of you guys are waiting for.

I just recently read the threads for the first time from the beginning, and this "waves to ya" started out as someone who just saw this meyers guy for an operation, and rather than move on with his or her life like any normal person, seems to have stuck around as some kind of authority and expert on this meyers and the whole athletic pubalgia subject. Tell me there isn't something strange about this fact?

and i've had the surgery also, and i'm telling you that whatever you're reading into this, is more a reflection on the poster than the dr. himself. and really, the only person who is no position to judge is you.

Lets take a look at this former meyers patient. Their ending comment in one of the previous posts sounds like an info-mercial hard sell, wondering why you have not gone to see meyers. It almost sounds like someone has put alot of effort into cultivating you and now expects to be paid for their effort? I'm in health care, and I have to be careful that this meyers isn't in the same network that I am, although I don't have any problem with him or her.

Groin man, can you post the names of the other web sites that this "waves to ya" has posted on, because this seems even stranger that a former patient is going to such an extreme to promote this subject?
