The tiger would come in and out before any sumo wrestler's reaction time. Or the tiger would just start with a sumo wrestler on one of the ends of the line. Then it would be impossible for the them to dive on. Or the tiger would just take them all out at the same time with one or two swipes.

If the tiger knew that its purpose was to survive against the 3 soldiers, it would win no problem...if not, the noise it made taking the first one out would attract the second and third, if they were properly positioned and prepared, who would fire without regard for their comrade, presumably with automatic fire at relatively close range.
Automatic fire in such a situation is extremely dangerous, even to a tiger. Much would depend on tactics, and whether or not the tiger could be trained to recognize the situation and perform optimally.
A normal tiger would just try to kill the first guy for food, not all of them for contest. As it had the first guy down, the remaining two would kill it.

Why do some people think that it would be impossible for a tiger to get out from under a bunch of sumo wrestlers, dead or alive?
I think it would be rather easy. It is a CAT.
True land invincibility, among species that are no longer extinct, would go to a Polar Bear or Kodiak Bear. They are unbelievable.
Even something like a Gaboon Viper, although delivering a fatal bite, would not survive the initial encounter.
I often wonder how a large bear and an elephant would get along, they strike me as the same sort of folks.

This should have been established in the original post. My vote is for the football players to be completely naked. If they want to wear pads, put some on the Tiger too.

I am not sure he is being snarky. He was only saying that "would" suggests a certainty that they would prevail and "could" queries whether they might have a snowball's chance.

Ageing Farmer Kills Leopard With Bare Hands In Kenya

A 73-year-old man used his bare hands to tear out the tongue of a leopard that attacked him in Kenya and killed it, a newspaper said Wednesday of an incident confirmed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
The 73-year-old Daniel M'Mburugu was working in his potato garden near Mount Kenya in the centre of the country when the animal, apparently aggressive, hurtled from nearby grass and charged towards him.
"It let out a blood-curdling snarl that made the birds stop chirping. I froze for some seconds, then it dawned on me that death was staring at me on the face," he told the Standard Newspaper.
M'Mburugu, a peasant farmer, dropped the machete he was carrying and forced his hand into the leopard's mouth, pulling out its tongue in an act of self-defence, according to the report in the daily.
"A voice, which must have been from God, whispered to me to drop the panga (machete) and thrust my hand into its wide open mouth, I obeyed," he said, explaining that the leopard sank its teeth into his wrist, but would not let go.
As the struggle continued, M'Mburugu realised that the animal's "breathing was belaboured", prompting him to keep pulling the tongue.
Villagers only responded when the animal lay dying and he gained instant status as a village hero, the paper said.
"Wardens said the leopard attacked the man because it was injured elsewhere ... wild animals are usually very aggresive and attack unprovoked when injured," KWS spokesman Edward Indakwa told AFP.
"Nevertheless, he was lucky," he added of the incident that occurred early this month.
Incidents of human-wildlife conflict in the east African nation are common, mostly near game parks and national reserves.
Predators tend go "easy" prey when the predators become old or when ill. This is what you see when lions get older and can't chase gazelles. I predict that is quite likely that the leopard in this case left its environment (full of deer, gazelles, Impalas and whatever else leopards eat) and ventured into the surrounding human settlement for easy prey. Nevertheless, it is quite impressive that a 73yr-old would be a match for any leopard.
