After the interview concluded, I asked him if he was going to petition to get into the final. He then said something along the lines of "I don't think I deserve it." or "I don't think I earned it."

You do have to start somewhere, but the World Championships seems like an odd place to do so.
There's something to shoot for: the World Championships. So each federation can at least send it's best athlete. Look at Anguilla. In 2007, they sent the unqualified Shara Proctor who was 29th in qualification with a jump of only 5.82m. Fast forward two years, and she was sixth in Berlin.
Rupp looked rough. Maybe he was conserving. Won't be in the medals. Its Lagat vs. Farah in a 13:30 final with a 52.0 last 400. Merga will be 4th. Very nice to see that race from Cragg. He won't be in the top 10 but he finshed a race and made the final. This deal is going out in 70 for the first lap and might break a record for the slowest 5000 World Championship final ever.

Actually no. I don't anticipate one Ethiopian or Kenyan sacrificing themselves to take it out on 59 and 4:04 to help an all time fit dominant runner. I don't believe 12:36 and 26:17 5000's are clean. And I never will. It won't be a sub 13:00 race. The main contenders have the fastest yearly times and the best kicks.
Oh I get it. Try hard for half the race. Trip and fall. Make it seem like someone else's fault. You get into finals.

Rupp for 5-7th.
Lagat should be sharper now and with Farah running the 10, he should make up the difference.
Farah is #1 distance runner now, but good for second in this one.
Merga looks to be in shape, is dangerous.
Rupp has made the transition to world class. He is in the hunt in every quality race now. You know if he has a perfect day body mind and luck, he can beat Farah. look too for Rupp to go sub 13 after the chanmps, provided there is a time trial like race out there.
There are no records of the guy in other races, he could very well have been a 13-14 minute 5k type with a lot more pride than most people who would just drop out.

Just watched the interview of Jake Robertson.
I been around some of the who's who and say this Jake Robertson fellow stands out with any of them in terms of character.
I can't imagine a more eloquent disposition after he was mightily abused by the situation.
Thank's to good judgement he's in the final too.
At this point Jake is an also ran, but can probably run around 13:10 (hoover race), as I think he's beaten some quality Kenyans in cross country.
So Jake in 10 position. expect a couple of NDF and blowups, while Jake is solidly running for a decent place.
I thought Rupp looked good. I was impressed he had confidence enough in his kick to stay in 7th or 8th until the final 100M with nothing but East African runners in front of him. But he did look put out after the race. Still 3 1/2 days to rest up for the final. Realistically I see him doing what he did in the 10K. Finishing about 7th and not too far back from the winner.

What time is the final? This heat was in the hot, humid AM no? I really won't be surprised if rupp finishes higher than in to 10,000. He had to be a bit rusty coming into that with very little racing this summer. Now the monkey is off his back, he's got some recent racing under him and little to lose. He has a lot less racing to do/time to wait for the final push and he has that 5000 finish earlier this summer to reflect on and draw confidence from. If he stays out of trouble I think he has a medal shot if it's anywhere from a 13:15 to 13:45 winning final.

to let a guy in the final having trailed off 15 seconds in the last 2 laps is a disgrace. saying he got bumped with 800 to go, boo hoo, does that not happen in every race, all the time? Christ almighty, they may as well hand Morgan Ucency the gold medal out of Jenny Simpsons arms if they are gonna persist with this ridiculous carry on of letting an athlete (who wouldnt have qualified anyway) who fell (at the 2k mark where he easily caught back up as they were doing 69 laps) to be placed in the final as a 16th man. Ucency would surely have won the world title, she beat jenny b easily in usas, so give her a gold too, its only consistent!?
Mark my Words, jake robertson will come dead last in the final, and thats a guarantee. he is not one of the best 16 athletes over 5000m in the world, has no pedigree and has never shown that he would be even capable of making the final, if his "rhythm" hadnt been disturbed by being bumped, jostled.
if he had any class he would turn down this free pass as its not fair to the sport and he definately did not deserve it. lets remind ourselves that the A standard is 13.20. He cant even do that.
