Everyone please read the Delaware football forum above that O'Doyle has so kindly posted. You will be enlightened by brainless football players, parents, and sad fans that wish their team could win the DI National Championship....wait wait I meant to say DI-AA. I just wish that more people knew the football team operates at a loss just like the rest of the sports in UD's programs.

just did a comparison with a real D1 school that makes a nice profit each year, Penn State. They only have 13 more roster spots. Shouldn't there be a bigger gap of roster sizes between D1 and the women's league?

My condolences go out to the UD men's runners, throwers and jumpers. This message board is headed in the wrong direction though. There is too much talk of title ix. And from what I have seen about this situation, title ix is merely a scapegoat, a curtain for the administration to hide their bashful faces behind. There has never been a documented complaint against the UD athletic department due to 'gender equity', nor was there threat of a complaint in the immediate future. Two years ago, the indoor team was reclassified and women's golf was set to begin in the ensuing years.

The university had already shown progressive action towards gender equity. The reasons for these cuts appear to be completely financial in nature. In a ruse by administration, all blame is being shifted to the reverse discrimination legislation that is title ix. In a time when the University of Delaware is supposedly expanding toward a brighter future, cutting teams that are renowned as academic powerhouses is the last thing to do. They often have a majority of the team on the academic honor roll and also had the men's xc scholar athlete of the year in the caa this season.

If you have read thus far into my rant, please do one more thing: email Patrick Harker (harker@udel.edu), the university president, and express your disgust with this movement. It will have no affect on the standing of the program but it may help the truth come out: that title ix is not the overriding force of this decision.

UD spends $5.2 million per year on Football.

They don't even spend enough to be registered for a combined track program anymore.

Well the school spends over $6,000 and $18,000 on each football and basketball player respectively. Our program only spends $750 per runner. In fact, cutting one basketball player would more than pay for the operating costs of the entire cross country team.

Only a handful of football teams in the NCAA operate at a profit.

Wow..I hope the damn Football team gets cut. That is definately something that is long overdue. No where near as hard or as great as Running and clearly is a lesser sport.. So let's cut Football and see how the Football players respond then once their "great" sport is finished.

But No...No one is going to cut the Football team. Let's just cut sports that are actually cheap and don't cost us lots of money...Seriously, Football players and Colleges these days have not a brain to speak of.

I feel really sorry for the U.D. runners. Even though they were basically a club team already (on Jeff Pearlman's blog he said that they had ZERO scholarships for 12 roster spots) this is still hard because now they can't compete in NCAA competitions at all. I hope that the runners that decide to transfer can find a good stable program.

The article was a little misleading about the scholarships. Technically, XC has no scholarships by itself but it is included under outdoor t&f for scholarship purposes. So distance runners can get money for both, even though in the paperwork it's all called "track and field" money.

Well, the letter says no student-athlete should contact the media yada yada. However, thanks to the AD, these guys are technically no longer student-athletes. Don't see how they can enforce that.

The cuts go into affect for XC 2011 (ie no more of it) and TF in 2012. The male long distance runners who were part of the cross teams and and all the other male TF athletes will still compete in indoor/outdoor as student-athletes and then the programs will be gone.

Title IX within each sport! Divide the BCS money with the women.

If women were given a chance to play football in high school, they would. Look at high school women's hockey. All they need is a chance.

You guys should already know where your going to transfer: Boston University. Any other place is stupid. We could probably only take the best guys because we are soooooo gooood!

I cant believe that they had less than 9000 people go to a football PLAYOFF game. That is shocking when considering the amount of shit they get and money that is poured into the program. The HS I coach at now gots like 2-3000 on a regular Friday night game this year. They had a good year but come on. Im glad I never went to a football game when I was there. Thats not even a good crowd for basketball.

Here is one way to fight back: Organize a football boycott. If I lived in Delaware, I would gladly donate a few Saturdays in the fall to go work the picket lines. Make signs, pass out flyers explaining what happened and how much money the football team actually makes. Maybe you'll get picked up on the local news, and your message will get out. Maybe not. It's worth a try.

At the very least, it would be fun to get out there and do some good old fashioned protesting. That's what college is all about.
