What makes you a hobbyjogger is if you ever referred to a half marathon as anything other than that name, 13.1 miles or 21.08KM. It is not a Mini-Marathon, a half-thon, or a pikermi.

If you have ever entered a half marathon relay (yes the RNR Series offers these), then this makes you a hobbyjogger!

You run in place while waiting for the signal to change.

I will agree with this. I was the pace leader at a marathon this past spring. I show up for the start with my little $5 Walmart watch on my wrist. I was probably asked 5 times before the start of the race why I wasn't wearing a Garmin and about 10 times during Mile 1 how I knew how fast we were running or if we were on pace....My simple reply to these people was "we're fine, don't worry about it, there is a long way to go". At about mile 10, I got sick of the "oh, we were 7 seconds faster on that mile" type of people I would hear behind me.

Nope, hobbyjoggers stop because they 1) are ignorant of the use of running while waiting for the signal to change and 2) worry about what people who see them (sure to be complete strangers) will think if they don't stop running while waiting.

Not to criticize but if you were actually 7 seconds too fast for a series of miles early in the marathon then you weren't being a very good pacer. Better 7 seconds too slow then too fast in the marathon.

Only if you're running it on a track. What if that mile was downhill? What if the previous mile had two turns, one a hairpin, in it? On the roads, 7 seconds per mile either way hardly makes a difference worth noting unless you're slowing by 7 seconds per mile over the past few miles with no uphills.

We used to call them FFRs back in the 70s.

I found most of these posts to be entertaining and did not take it to heart--however this past weekend, I did get beat in a 10k race by a runner who wore arm warmers AND compression socks. Seriously, in the middle of summer??? Just saying...

My 10-year younger brother used to go on a LSD 8-10 miler on Sunday afternoons.

He'd drive the course that morning and throw 2-3 water bottles into the woods so he could keep himself hydrated.

That-- to me-- defines a hobby jogger. Someone who has never pushed him/herself.

I'm guessing we are making a distinction between people who simply run to stay in shape (ie, overall fitness cardio or ppl who do other sports and use it for conditioning) and people who are really, really "into" running and the idea of being a part of the sport and feel the need to brag about how many "'thons" they did last year?

Both where I live and where I work have a robust population of the latter and it drives me nuts. Due to chronic over-use injuries, I can no longer run long distance, so have shifted over to sprinting, with a focus on the 400m. You should see me trying to explain this concept to these people! No one gets it...the response is usually "Well, one lap isn't very far..." On a funny side note, this buddy of mine who is a full-fledged hobbyjogger but is smart enough to know and make fun of the running groups he runs with, said I need to get a bumper sticker that says "400m". He says the egos of the heavy set "marathon junkies" are unreal, it's literally a badge of honor and no one cares about times whatsoever, to the point it's almost seen as rude to say a time under 4 hours if it comes up! How dare you be so ego centric to have such a narcissistic goal!!!

...you never ghost run. You always pay the entry fee because it's just not worth it if you don't get a shirt.
