Quite a few of them are drawn to it, as evidenced by the fast masters times in major marathons. fewer than in open categories but the money is lower and many of them don't feel they can compete.

Yeah, and Ryan Hall ran really crappy in London after his HM AR earlier the same year...

Ryan Hall did NOT set the AR for the HM while preparing for London. He had not yet started marathon training 3 months before London. Houston was not a tune up race. He was planning on running LA and was only offered the London contract after Houston.

I am responding to the person who is known ads "red-glare" . I think I speak for the majority on this post- that either you clean up your language or get the heck off this site. No one cares about how tough you think you can talk by articulating yourself with curse words. They are so un called for. We have elite, professional athletes join in on this post and it's comments like yours that have absolutely no value whatsoever that keeps them off. I cant imagine how you sound in person....but if having to actually write curse words to get your point across is nessecary for you, ...then you are in really bad shape and need to get a real life. Because it wont be tolerated here. Just a heads up.

hey not sure if this has been said before because I didn't feel like reading the entire thread. But what about adam goucher?! His own coach told him that he was done...he switched coaches and then ended up setting a new PR. What about that??

His own coach told him that he was done without medication. I believe he was correct.

are u kidding me? she is still our top marathoner, if she complains after a race.. dont pay attention to it, just be happy that we have people like her still racing.

She is one of the nicest and fun people i have had a chance to go on a run with and i love to watch her race!

only 60% think that she should continue according to the front page poll. I am part of that 60% and I wish she would shut up about what she is going to do and just do it. In reading this thread many people agree with me. I would say that about half of that 60% feel that way. That means that 70& of the people think that Deena needs to either quit or shut up. Only 30% think that she should continue as is.

She was complaining about wanting to stop after 22miles...doesn't everybody want to do the same after pain kicks in? I guess you should only run when you are having a perfect day.

Great runner. Doesn't need us to tell her what to do. She'll eventually figure it out. She figured it out on the way up and she figure it out on the way down.

It's part of the gig, they pay Deena to show up and be American white girl in front of the cameras and mics at the press conferences. It's all a dog and pony act to get attention for the race in the media.

I would hate to be her coach. Whether she retires or not, motivation has to be a bitch. She has won an Olympic Medal, and if she is honest with herself, she will admit that is never going to happen again. She has the AR. She has won a WMM. But all of these things are in her past and all have seved as motivators in the past. She has also earned a ton of money in the sport. She now has to find something new to motivate her. That is rough.

Deena now reminds me of Kate Gosselin in dancing with the stars. She draws a great audience but no one believes she has a chance to win. We are all just waiting to see her whiny excuses. The Monti article afterwards did not let us down.
