What about the sea lions acceleration in water. They look so fat with small tail flippers I think they would take to long to get up to cruising speed to build a big enough lead over the otter.

Does anyone else enjoy the wonderful absurdity of watching a 4 second clip of a sealion goofily galloping around a pool and nodding profoundly--more evidence for the great debate. I assure you, no one else in the world is doing this right now!
Thread of the month no doubt.
Great try, but I think the Water Chevrotain isn't going to cut it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13GQbT2ljxs
I'm sure someone's already brought it up, but I just read that hippos can't actually swim (they're not buoyant enough), instead they have to push off the bottom of the water ... apparently they can only go about 5 mph when doing that anyways. So I guess that definitely factors into the whole debate about whether or not the animals are allowed to touch the bottom. Man, I was really thinking hippos had a good chance, I still think people are underestimating their speed on land, but in this case, I'd guess they'd end up with a DQ.
This may be dumb, but what about a frog? great swimmers and powerful legs for jumping on land.
any any facts on snakes yet?
Guys, guys, I don't think we're giving sea lions enough respect here.
Just check out the amazing agility of this guy as he explodes out of water:

agility != speed
Ooh yeah, I actually meant acceleration.
Uh oh, looks like we've got some more competition:
Cheetahs generally run out of steam quick because of the hight emperaturesof their environment and the extremem body heat they generate when running (~70MPH). If they start off in the water, I'd imagine they'll stay cool enough to prevent them from tiring too quickly and can get in a wicked fast 100m on land afterward before giving up the ghost.
just read this entire thread... spectacular. pretty sure this solidifies the winner though
Some of the fastest snakes in the world cannot out run (out slither) a human. Snakes are out for sure. They can't even swim that fast.
I just thought about other primates -- from the movie Planet of the Apes, we know they can run real fast, but they don't like water very much. Google says there are a few that swim, but they don't look like promising candidates.
Seems the pronghorn is the top pick so far. Maybe an otter, but probably the prong. If they are close to a whitetail or moose in the water, no contest on land. Also, I don't think the cheetah can stay close enough in the water to catch up on land.
i think i just found the thread to inspire everyone to stop reading and posting here.
if you are answering this question, you are a) having too much time on your hands. b) are in serious need of getting a life. c) getting far too little nookie...
d. all of the above.
i now know definitively why i am a runner...who stopped hangiing out with runners...
and why tv networks sports employees call track fans "track weenies."
you all take the cake...
especially the OP, who has disapeared to provide no answer...lol...on y'all...
Yes, calling me a nerd was equally effective when I was in middle school. Grow up.
Phelps would win. He'd beat Jesus.
