I have no idea who is the "toughest." What does that even me? Each branch specializes in different things. They aren't necessarily comparable. Using something like a knife fight to compare seems silly.
I've never been in the military, but have had coworkers (I am a firefighter now) who did quite a bit of time in the service. My one friend, a former Marine, said that ANGLICO impressed him the most (note: I don't even know what ANGLICO is). Another friend, a badass in his own right was passed up for Recon (not quite the level of "Force Recon").
Does anyone know if it is possible to get into a special forces unit directly as a civilian? As in, when you enlist you know you are going straight to special forces training after your basic training?

i don't think it is even close they do a far wider range of training for one i think they are the only one to do winter survival training in the extreme. I was in Norway when they were doing survival training they had to survive overnight in the snow with minimal clothing
they built snow caves with their hands etc

Navy Seals don't do anything in cold like that I fact i think only the rangers & air force teams do severe cold weather training.
the govt always takes the lowest bid. that defintely includes the lowest quality people for the military. how many outstanding people have you known joined the military ? exactly, the losers and low lifes all end up there, plus in the fire and police departments. that's why those folks have to have p.r. to bolster the image and self-confidence of their lowlife personnel. the sf whatever standards are setup to allow career people to pass them. if the standards were professiomal elite level then they wouldn't have any dumb asses to die for nothing in iraq and afghanistan. those training stunts are just that, gym stunts and training camps stunts designed easy enough to pass enough people to fill the billets (read "body bags"). as mentioned by a previous poster, the only reasonable metric for U.S. toughness is combat medals and citations awarded after review by pentagon brass. makes sense that the pentagon gets thousands of applications for bravery awards from suckers trying to get on the fast track for a general/admiral gig. they only accept the real badass stories, and they get as many applications for top secret "dirty dozen" type operations as regular "saving private ryan" type shit.

Most men who are SeALs, SF, Delta, Force Recon, Rangers are more like decathletes than running backs or marathoners. Their lives depend on them being good at a lot of things more than being great at one or two. I recall reading an article where a SeAL instructor said the average SeAL is about 5-10, 175 and too much bulk gets in the way.

This is an absolutely pointless thread and all of the other SOF operators that I work with, not only within the US contingent, but Coalition Force contingent wouldn't take a second look at it. It would be a shame to overlook SF operational detachment Delta (Eric Bana played a Delta guy in Blackhawk Down, badass as shit going down) or SEALs' DevGru. Those groups' skill sets are probably geared more toward room entry/room clearing and gaining control of a building/boat/plane.
However, the fact that those guys have risen to be the best of the best of the best means theyre probably tough as balls. These guy will literally die rather than quit.
